View Full Version : Shadow odyssey

So this is kinda a lame question and I apologize ahead of time, this might actually belong in the free forum but that one seems lame so I'm going to ask here. I have shadow odyssey, and it's been a long time since I played, my computer before couldn't handle eq2. Anyway I saw they were offering eq2 for free, I'm guessing it has limitations and what not. So if I have shadow odyssey can I install that instead of having to download the entire [Removed for Content] game? will it work? This is all just temporary until I get a game card then I'll probably try and come back into the game, but like I said it's been a long time, I forgot all my eq2 stuff so if you upgrade from f2p to p2p do you need a code or anything? or is just sub fee? anyway thanks.

There's a free-to-play side to EQ2 now, it's called EQ2:Extended (often abbreviated to EQ2X). It's a separate server and game client from EQ2 (technically it's the same client program, but pointed at a different set of servers so you can't just use the regular game client). EQ2X is technically free to play at the lowest level, but to get above level 80 or to unlock classes, races and the better-quality gear you'll need to pay (either by purchasing the unlocks or by paying a subscription). You can find information at http://everquest2.com/free_to_play/index and download the EQ2X client at http://launch.soe.com/eq2x/ (I'd recommend getting the full game and letting it download overnight, the streaming client will get you in-game faster since it only downoads zones as you enter them but it's got... issues with performance and stability).

Note that while you can pay the same monthly (or yearly) subscription in EQ2X as in EQ2 and get basically the same features (for DoV you'll either need Platinum membership or an active EQ2 subscription with DoV active on it), it's not currently possible to transfer characters from EQ2X over to EQ2. Also, if you pay a Gold or Platinum subscription in EQ2X, it doesn't give you access to EQ2. If you do want both, it may be cheaper to buy a Station Access subscription, they've lowered the price on it and it gives you both EQ2 and Gold membership in EQ2X.

As for your game, you can install the client you've got but it'll have to re-download most of the assets since they've changed so much since the release of TSO. You'd probably do just as well getting the new launcher from http://launch.soe.com/eq2/ (I'd download the full game, not the streaming version) and letting it download overnight. If you have the key for TSO, that'll actually give you up through Sentinel's Fate (the expansion before the current one). SOE flagged everyone for that when Destiny of Velious came out. You'll need to buy DoV to get the current content, but if you aren't level 86 or higher yet you'll need to work through the earlier content to get levelled up anyway so you won't need DoV right off.
