Hi guys

I have been trying to log back into both EQ2X and EQ2 without much success. I haven't logged into EQ2 for a few years, but I was playing EQ2X a few months back with no issues before my computer died.

Now I have a new machine running Windows 7 64bit and I have downloaded the whole game, but at the 'creating entities' stage these is a long pause before the game gives me a "lost connection to server" message and my connection to the wireless network temporarily drops offline.

I have read a few historical threads where others had similar issues but nothing in them has helped much, and a lot was useless to me as it applied to earlier versions of Windows.

The problem doesn't seem to be with the router, I just downloaded the streaming client for EQ2X on my wifes laptop and I could log into the game to character select without a problem.

Here is my Dxdiag:

------------------System Information------------------Time of this report: 6/19/2011, 22:35:56 Machine name: VAUGHAN-PC Operating System: Windows 7 Home
This line leads me to believe its a router issue "my connection to the wireless network temporarily drops offline."

Perhaps its being overloaded. How savvy are you with its admin tools? Can you check the active IP connections? Does it do the same thing when hard wired in as opposed to wireless?

You can even try bypassing it altogether, plug directly in to your modem, and see if that alleviates the issue. If it does there may be a firmware update for your router or you may need to make other changes that I would be more than happy to investigate once we've determined it is the router.

There are other possible causes too but not too many that would also reboot/shut down your router at the same time. That's typically an indication that either it cannot handle the bandwidth (very unlikely) or it cannot handle how many active connections are open or the type of connections they are (likely), amongst some other even less common reasons.

Thanks for the prompt reply

I have accessed the router to check the admin tools, the DHCP table shows 5 devices with IP addresses listed, but 3 are expired so only the two computers I have mentioned are logging in to it. The ARP table only mentions my computer and my wifes laptop.

I am sharing it with my landlord in the house above me so its a bit of a pain to hardwire it in or bypass it but I can do that if I have to, just means disconnectiing everything and carrying it upstairs.

I have read some other peoples old threads when they were having similar issues and some suggested that it the connection could be timing out due to the graphics card having issues at the creating entities stage. I do have the latest drivers for it though.

What confuses me is that I can log in and play normally through the same router on my wifes laptop, so I am trying to figure out what is different about my new machine that it can't do the same.

If I attempt logging in to EQ2 while her laptop is connected to the network it doesn't drop her connection, just mine. Would it drop all connections if overloaded?

I will post again if I can organise getting my computer plugged directly into the router and let you know how it goes.

I would assume it would drop all connections if the router was the culprit here.

Any personal firewall, antivirus, or security suite software present on the PC? Disable them one by one and force a disconnect in-game. Let's narrow it down.

Other than windows firewall, which I have made an exception in for EQ2, the only security I have is avast antivirus. I disabled this and tried logging in but the problem is still there.

I downloaded EQ last night and tried it earlier, and I can log into that without a problem, even with antivirus on and no exception in the firewall for it.

Are there any files that could have become corrupted in the download that I could delete and redownload? I don't really want to do the whole 12gb again if I can avoid it.

I am running EQ2 and EQ2X from the same folder if that could be creatng an issue, but I read others had no problems doing that.

Just to be thorough, separate them. Install EQ2 live to a separate folder and see if it lets you progress beyond your current error. I haven't personally tried running them from the same folder but I would assume that since EQ2x uses the same config files, but these files would contain entirely separate information, that this would present problems in and of itself. As far as I know, the main EXE files are very different so this SHOULDN'T work at all, but again I haven't tried it and our LaunchPad development is separate from the game development and the team of representatives I work with.

Also, remove the exception you set and re-add it. Can't be certain this will fix the issue but its another basic step in an effort to cover all the bases.

Ok I managed to separate EQ2 live and EQ2X into two different folders, although it wasn't as easy as I thought it might be. I have also reallowed EQ2X through the windows firewall and allowed the EQ2 client as well.

The same problem exists no matter which one I try to log into.

I will try to put in more detail this time in case I missed something important when I described it earlier. I watched it more closely, and I noticed it freezes for a fair while on 'creating entities" and the bar never fills up, then it does quickly fill a couple of other bars before finishing on something like "updating maps" as the character select screen comes up with the big "lost connection to server" window in front of it. What I can see of the background says something along the lines of " No servers are available".

I'll try and see if I can figure out what is different between this new machine and the laptop that seems to run it without a problem, its the only thing i can think of to do.

UPDATE: Tried using the EQ2 launcher rather than the station launcher to start the game. Now I can get to character creation, no characters showing, only option is to create one. Partway through this process I lose connection to server. Tried twice, connection dropped after a similar amount of time each occasion, less than a minute.

If I try EQ2X however the problem is the same as mentioned earlier - connection is lost immediately as the character select/creation screen come up.

UPDATE: Tried a separate install of the EQ2X streaming client, but it only gets to nearly finishing caching appearances before getting an error "appearance cache is invalid"

I found the solution to this problem in an unusual way. My computer was next to my 42" plasma TV because I was going to use it as a monitor - but I noticed today when I switched to it I became unable to use the wireless network.

I have moved the computer to a different part of the house with a slightly stronger wireless signal (3/5 rather then 2/5) and away from the TV and now everything seems to work perfectly.

That is a very unusual issue! Let me know if anything else comes up.
