Gating is an industry term for anything that stops players from regular quest/level/etc. progression.

I am so humbled at your desire to post for the first time ever and do it in my thread. Why don't they just say "block"?

Why don't they say weakened instead of nerfed? It's just an industry term. It signifies that you have hit a closed gate. A gate that others have passed through, but closed in front of you. One with no way around, usually.

I'm retiring later this year, after 40 odd years in business and IT. One thing I've learned in that time is that the industry just loves dusting off the old ideas and re-branding them as new concepts. I've no doubt that KISS (Keep It Simple, Stupid) will eventually make a comeback. Meanwhile just think of it as a way of keeping you guessing, and I agree "block" would have been much easier.

I thought it was Stupid Simple.

i took that to mean something entirely different. I was thinking players that were teleporting in were getting something and not that it meant to be blocked behind a gate. By Gating i was thinking of the old EQ1 term for teleporting. To "Gate" in EQ1 was about the same as Call to Home is in EQ2

I like the word gate, I think professional sports announcers should start using the word gate instead of block, now that would rock.

Gating is an industry term that loosely means the player is stuck not knowing how to advance, though a means is generally available.

Stuck is used to describe when they can not continue via any means, and would be the 'block' equivelant.

I'm ok with the Gating term as it is clearly identifiable. I hate the terms they use that aren't remotely quantifiable, like 'hardcore'.

Perhaps your response was interpreted as being lippy No worries, I took no offense. It was my pleasure to give you my first post.

Brigh wrote:

I am so humbled at your desire to post for the first time ever and do it in my thread. Why don't they just say "block"?

Technical meaning. "blocked" implies there's no way to continue, eg. a bug has made it so an NPC you have to talk to to progress won't talk to you. "gated" implies that there's a way to progress but you haven't met the requirements yet, eg. the NPC you need to talk to won't talk to you until you've gained sufficient faction and you haven't yet. It's the difference between the solid fence that you can't get through and the locked gate in the fence that you need to get the key to unlock.

If they are going to make up new words then they should pick ones that remove confusion and not add to it.

I was a bit confused too, I was thinking gate home scrolls.
