I did a Fresh install using the fully install setup which gave the fuggly launcher'

I will be moving along and suddently the game will freeze up for several seconds and then I can move again

I will also experience severe client crashes which force me to reboot the PC and then when I run a full file scan the scan will end up downloading several gigabytes of files??? Much of the initial lockup seems to be with sound -

After the current file scan it wants to download 4.3 Gig of data - [Removed for Content] is going on with this.

Here is an abbreviated DXDIAG and MSINFO

<span style="font-size: x-small;
Sounds like two issues here.

We'll address the crashing/lockups first.

Your video card drivers are up to date and your PC is more than capable of handling what it is. I do notice your Sound card drivers are very old and that can cause issues in and of itself, although I am not led to believe that it is the source of what you describe.

Now, just based on the description of how the issue occurs, I have to suspect heating here first and foremost. Nvidia has the its "Nvidia System Tools" with built-in GPU temperature monitoring. I do suggest monitoring and recording your temperatures at the time of the error and immediately after it recovers from it. Feel free to post those results here.

Would need more information to address why you have to redownload files over and over but short of launching the game from different folders (i.e. clicking on a different icon on your desktop than you usually do to start EQII), but we can start with a hard disk check. Check the SMART status from your bios or hard drive manufacturer supplied utilities and run a chkdsk and defrag. That's just the basics.

Let me explain more about the problem.

I got a new MB, CPU and graphics card. The game was very stable on my old system -- when I got the new hardware I just replaced my old MB and CPU and kept XP that is then the trouble started. I went to WIN 7 and things got worse --it turned out I had a bad memory stick and am in the process of replacing it). When I would log in the graphics for a character would be missing or would have no head, the Quest Givers did not show up in a location. The sound card was built into the MB and was Realtek -- the default setting where for High Def Sound and did not work with the game but worked when I set tham back to CD sound quality.

I decided that WIN 7 was the cause of the problem so went back to XP and used the old sound card so I could bypass the REaltek card. For example I have 4 toons in Thurgadin doing the daily faction TS quest and when I play them I have no problems. Once I zone out and do other things I will crash it seems to be mostly on zoning.

Once I crash I go in an delete my Cache and Logincache file -- that may or may not help me get back in the game. If I crash again on loading I will reboot the PC and see if I can get back int - usually not - The I scan all the files - and that is when I start these downloads of such enormouse size again - but once that download finished I can get back in the gamel

The hardware is really built for WIN 7 but --1. I hate Win 7

2. The game does not seem to run well on Win 7 and has the graphic glitches I mentioned( but that may have been due to the bad memory stick)

Once I get the replacement memory should I reinstall Win 7 - would that make the game more stable ?

I have run chkdsk on the drive I have EQ2 on ( not the C drive) and it comes back with no errors. I am using a Hitachi Drive. This is the identical drive the EQ2 has run on for the last 2 years or so.

You and I could argue for months about why you hate Windows 7 so we'll just leave that alone

But to answer your question, yeah you should use the latest up to date operating system if available to you. I recommend doing so absolutely.

By the way, bad memory can cause corruption on your hard drive too. This corruption can be partial so that the corrupted file is still operable but generates unexpected results. Just food for thought in that regard. Hard drive could be fine, the data integrity on it might not be, or with just specific files.

Going along with your description of the issue, lets say you crash (full PC crash) while data is being written to your hard drive, the data being written could be incomplete and inoperable, a simple corrupt file. However, lets say its updating an already existing file, adding data to it or replacing data within it, and you experience a crash at this point, everything being written at that time has the potential to be incomplete. In the case where its adding to a file, this file may not appear to have any issues but simply generate unexpected results. There are measures to protect your data against these but this isn't the be all end all of data protection we're talking about.

I think reinstalling EQII, while very time consuming, is not an unreasonable next step for you as well.

Okay today after the GU60 I crashed twice trying to login - the code was OC5. Rebooted the PC and launcher gave tme 80.3 MB download. Got in and played for about and hour. Was flying to Goahamari and the PC locked up and I had to it reset. Logged back on and played.

When I logged off I went to character selected and clicked EXTI - receive the following system message.

Small::free() called with corrupted block. Game crashed and I was out.All this time I had sound on MUTE. The general feeling I am getting is the problem are paging errors - with the game accessing blocks of date which is not available to it.

On Friday I should have the extramemory and will reinstall Win 7

Thanks for your help.
