For the past few weeks i've had a problem with a router provided by my ISP (talktalk), so I decided i'd buy a new one.

Went out, purchased a Netgear DGN 1000 router. Plugged it in, no problems, connected the the internet, browsing worked fine, and no stability issues.

However, the issue I am having is in regards to EQ2. I patched the game earlier with no problems at all, then when I try to log in, I get stuck at parts of the zoning screen, and I can see that my Ping is 1000+ and rising. On the odd occasion I managed to log in, Ping fluctuated between 200 for a few seconds, and then went up to peaks of 4k, with packet losses indicated as well. It kept me in game just about, but when I zoned, kicked again.

Naturally I assume its a problem with the new router blocking EQ2. So I go about allowing all the EQ2 specific ports (or atleast the ones i found listed) both inbound and outbound connections. But still no joy.

Any insights into this would be greatly appreciated, I can't see what I am missing!

*other info*

Windows IP Configuration Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : v1t99 Primary Dns Suffix . . . . . . . : Node Type . . . . . . . . . . . . : Unknown IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . : No WINS Proxy Enabled. . . . . . . . : NoEthernet adapter Local Area Connection: Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Intel(R) 82562V-2 10/100 Network Connection Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-1D-09-85-10-45 Dhcp Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : Yes Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.3 Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0 Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1 DHCP Server . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1 DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1 Lease Obtained. . . . . . . . . . : 25 May 2011 12:22:08 Lease Expires . . . . . . . . . . : 26 May 2011 12:22:08

Tracing route to sdkeq2-05-01.everquest2.com [199.108.12.161]over a maximum of 30 hops: 1 * 1 ms 1 ms 192.168.0.1 2 23 ms 23 ms 23 ms 89.242.32.1 3 23 ms 23 ms 24 ms host-78-151-225-105.static.as13285.net [78.151.225.105] 4 76 ms 24 ms 25 ms host-78-151-225-104.static.as13285.net [78.151.225.104] 5 52 ms 31 ms 31 ms xe-11-1-0-rt001.sov.as13285.net [62.24.240.14] 6 33 ms 32 ms 32 ms host-78-144-0-158.as13285.net [78.144.0.158] 7 33 ms 32 ms 31 ms xe-7-0-0.lon25.ip4.tinet.net [77.67.64.13] 8 101 ms 100 ms 100 ms xe-8-3-0.nyc20.ip4.tinet.net [89.149.183.134] 9 105 ms 104 ms 136 ms 192.205.37.37 10 175 ms 173 ms 174 ms cr1.n54ny.ip.att.net [12.122.86.6] 11 174 ms 174 ms 173 ms cr2.cgcil.ip.att.net [12.122.1.2] 12 173 ms 172 ms 172 ms cr1.cgcil.ip.att.net [12.122.2.53] 13 177 ms 173 ms 174 ms cr2.dvmco.ip.att.net [12.122.31.85] 14 174 ms 174 ms 174 ms cr1.slkut.ip.att.net [12.122.30.25] 15 174 ms 173 ms 176 ms cr2.la2ca.ip.att.net [12.122.30.30] 16 174 ms 174 ms 175 ms cr2.sd2ca.ip.att.net [12.122.31.9] 17 172 ms 172 ms 172 ms gar3.sd2ca.ip.att.net [12.122.109.69] 18 174 ms 172 ms 171 ms mdf1-gsr12-2-pos-7-0.san2.attens.net [12.122.255.206] 19 171 ms 171 ms 172 ms mdf001ffxmrs0002-eth-6-1.san2.attens.net [63.241.1.222] 20 182 ms 179 ms 180 ms vl20.sdkollsw-2.sonyonline.net [63.241.6.50] 21 180 ms 180 ms 180 ms sdkeq2-05-01.everquest2.com [199.108.12.161] Trace complete.Tracing route to sdkeq2-05-01.everquest2.com [199.108.12.161]over a maximum of 30 hops: 0 v1t99 [192.168.0.3] 1 * 192.168.0.1 2 89.242.32.1 3 host-78-151-225-105.static.as13285.net [78.151.225.105] 4 host-78-151-225-104.static.as13285.net [78.151.225.104] 5 xe-11-1-0-rt001.sov.as13285.net [62.24.240.14] 6 host-78-144-0-158.as13285.net [78.144.0.158] 7 xe-7-0-0.lon25.ip4.tinet.net [77.67.64.13] 8 xe-8-3-0.nyc20.ip4.tinet.net [89.149.183.134] 9 192.205.37.37 10 cr1.n54ny.ip.att.net [12.122.86.6] 11 cr2.cgcil.ip.att.net [12.122.1.2] 12 cr1.cgcil.ip.att.net [12.122.2.53] 13 cr2.dvmco.ip.att.net [12.122.31.85] 14 cr1.slkut.ip.att.net [12.122.30.25] 15 cr2.la2ca.ip.att.net [12.122.30.30] 16 cr2.sd2ca.ip.att.net [12.122.31.9] 17 gar3.sd2ca.ip.att.net [12.122.109.69] 18 mdf1-gsr12-2-pos-7-0.san2.attens.net [12.122.255.206] 19 mdf001ffxmrs0002-eth-6-1.san2.attens.net [63.241.1.222] 20 vl20.sdkollsw-2.sonyonline.net [63.241.6.50] 21 sdkeq2-05-01.everquest2.com [199.108.12.161] Computing statistics for 525 seconds...

Well it looks like you are in the UK (from your 1st hop) and your ping response times are fine until you cross the pond, then they start to degrade. Then when you get into AT&T's network it gets progressively worse, this is normal for AT&T they suck at pretty much everything they do. You may have better luck if you change to an EU server from the launcher click options and choose UK English I believe to select a UK server.

Or has this info just been left outdated?

Can not confirm that for sure.

Things to try/look at in the meantime.

Is your router configured for uPnP? If so you do not need to use port forwarding. You can also use port forwarding and disable uPnP on the router.

Try setting your computer up as the DMZ host on the router, this will allow all packets to travel freely, as a security precaution I wouldn't recommend running like this all the time as it negates the protection that baing behind a router gives but if this solves the problem it at least narrows it down.

Also run the ping test at various times of the day, also change to the proper server. You could be experiencing service degradation due to the provider oversubscribing the service.

http://www.pingplotter.com/

Is a good tool to use for doing these types of tests.

Also not really something I want to be running constantly...

When i ping the server through the cmd window, it works fine, i'm getting values ranging from 40-70, but its when I actually go in game, i get pings of 700+ when zoning, which increased upwards of 5000.

I got into game briefly, and managed to ask in 1-9 chat if others had problems with Netgear, and a few said they had, so it looks like I might be sending it back, and grabbing something different this weekend!

Since you are saying that this only happens in game, are you using the streaming launcher?

If that is the case it may be eating the majority of your bandwidth and causing problems when in game, do not know.

I play from behind a Netgear FVS336G and have no issues also play from behind an old model Linksys occasionally with no problems.

If you rerun the pings does your router/gateway always time out like that?
