Hi. Since the servers were down I am having an issue with the ingame browser. It initially works fine but after being logged in for a short space of time if I open it and type in a website it will freeze the game, crash and send me back to the desktop. Is there anything obvious I can do to try and stop this from happening please?

I use the browser window to display ACT and this never seems to bring about the fault. This worked fine before and only now seems to be playing up. I don't get any info other than "EQ2 Client Application has stopped working".

Are you using the custom browser window that comes with ACT or the default UI?

With the default, does it also crash?

Hi. I was using a non-standard one but not the one that comes with ACT. The reason I use it is it gives me 4 tabs to use as opposed to the standards 1. This would be fine I guess if I didn't use the window to access ACT's logs. Anyway I digress. I reverted to the standard and loaded our guilds website. It loads fine until I choose to load it again. When I do this the fault just kicks me out.

In addition to this I just renamed the UI folders so that I could test it with the standard UI as a whole. Fault still apparent.

I recall a known issue where the Mozilla DLLs that EQ2 uses are old ones with a known bug in them that causes crashes. If I dropped more recent copies of the DLLs (one where the bug was fixed) in the crashes ceased, but of course the next time I patch the old copies are put back in.

I have this problem as well with the in-game browser. I also use Mozilla. It doesn't happen all of the time, but most times it's when I've been logged in for a bit. (I use XP Home Edition, and I've updated my graphics drivers for the HD series ATI card.) This was only an issue when the servers came back up, and I am using the default browser.

There may be a problem with Firefox having moved on to version 4, the newer libraries may not be compatible with the rest of the Mozilla version used by EQ2.

That seems reasonable was this over the time that the servers were down meaning it was pure coincidence? It certainly is internet related as I use the browser all the time for ACT and it never fails. Any input from SoE would also be appreciated

Hiya. Sorry to have to bump this but how long do I wait before receiving a reply about this please? I know this may sound a little "convenient" but serveral guildies have been complaining of crashes recently and when I ask if they were using the browser it turns out it is the same fault as I am seeing. This would imply that this is impacting alot of people.

I am not sure if it is some kind of memory issue as basic sites such as wikia tend to load quite a few times before crashing whereas Zam will pretty much crash it straight away.

Crashes right away for me when I load Zam.com on one computer, it has firefox 4. The other computer has no crashing issues and is still using firefox 3.

I'll submit my infos later but I'm falling asleep and thought maybe that little bit of info would help (computers are different in other ways as well, but that seemed an important one).

Yes I am seeing more and more people with this issue now. Even in level chat people are complaining about it. The comment about Firefox 4 is interesting and to be honest I am tempted to uninstall it as this is becoming a major nuisance. I think the reason Zam causes it must be due to it being a larger page to load with alot more "going on". The same happens on our website which is also where we arrange raid builds and post them etc. Wikia is simply a very basic site which is why it doesn't seem to affect it so much.

I fail to see how Firefox 4 can affect the in-game browser as it's using it's own browser files (Firefox 1.x). You can confirm this multiple ways online. Also, setting it to IE9 as default on mine didn't resolve the zam crash. I simply don't go to zam. I rarely went before as it's a pain to use anyway.

I did a dirty fix that will solve the problem with Zam.com.

Problem:

Zam.com crashes on load using in-game browser due to flash ads.

Root cause:

In-game browser is using Firefox 1.x components. When the call to Adobe Flash 10.x (current) is made it crashes the game client as Adobe Flash 10.x is not compatible with Firefox 1.x.

Solution:

SOE needs to update in-game browser components to at least the 3.x base. Customers can exit game and go to the install folder for EQ2. Right click the mozilla folder and uncheck read-only. Copy of the contents of their Firefox 4.x, 5.x, 7x folder into mozilla, picking to overwrite files. Once done, right click on the mozilla folder again and check read-only thus preventing game from updating said folder.

This prevents the zam.com crash however it will still not be a true Firefox 4.x, 5.x, or 7.x based browser as can be confirmed in various ways including html5test.com which only gives it a 27 while 5.x has a score of 255.

Requirements for Adobe Flash 10.x:

Internet Explorer 6.0 and above Mozilla Firefox 3.0 and above Google Chrome3 Safari 4.0 and above Opera 9.5 and above AOL 9.0 and above

I would recommend people asking everyone that is having this issue to post here or even better, submit a ticket. I put all the info plus the file requested along with a link to this thread into a ticket and the first sentence in the reply was "What issues are you having?". I pretty much gave up at that point as all the info was there and yet he/she obviously didn't read a thing I had written. All they asked for was dxdiag details but I was so frustrated at his/her reply I simply haven't bothered doing anything further.

I informed them that this was happening to so many now that they would have to sort it out eventually and that some have even found work arounds. I also informed them that I found it quite insulting that they hadn't read my description or followed the link to here. I know it hardly helps matters but why should I waste my time if they don't even read what I had typed? Disappointing really.

I wonder if one uninstalled Flash for Firefox/Mozilla if that would solve it. I crash/freeze on zam.com sometimes as well with in the In-Game Browser (while using the DrumsUI btw). At least it would confirm if what the flash ads causing it to crash.

It certainly has nothing to do with aftermarket UI's as I have tried them all and even totally reverted to the standard UI. I know what you mean with regards to restricting flash content but really why should we? The real shame in all this is there are so many people just making do when really I would rather they would post about it which may escalate it a little. Everyone I can think of suffers from it but they simply do not use certain sites anymore or predominantly play in windowed mode anyway.

It is something I have learnt to live with and the workarounds make life a little easier. I can't see it being that much of a fix to be honest surely? I wouldn't really care at all if I could leave full screen to go windowed and then return but sadly due to other faults when I return to full screen some of my windows need repositioning. I only asked about this a few years ago though so maybe it'll be sorted soon.

I don't have information on any upcoming plans or changes to the in-game browser but it is a hot topic here. I'll keep trying my best to get movement on the issue but if you would like to open support tickets, it would definitely help emphasize the importance of the issue. I do recommend opening one as soon as you can if you have not already.

This does not mean that our development team is not already aware of the issue itself. Fact of the matter is, I am not part of that process and do not know exactly where they are in regards to fixing the issue. So to be thorough, I want to cover all of the basics so when I take it to development again I am already prepared to show proof that variable X isn't the cause, as an example, and I will need this in ticket form.

This is the easiest work-around I have come up with. Go to C:WINDOWSsystem32MacromedFlash (at least with Windows XP) and rename NPSWF32.dll to something like NPSWF32.~dll before starting the game.

This will cause Flash to not load for Mozilla based browsers. This will affect both the in-game browser and any others such as Firefox 4. I was able to browse around Zam and my own sites that I know have Flash players and the Flash content did not load. Zam seems to detect this and displays static ads in their place (at least ones that don't use Flash).

After leaving the game, rename the file back to NPSWF32.dll to restore Flash functionality for your normal browser.

Hope it helps,

If you can't change the file extention, follow this guide.

3. Right click the the batch file and select Run As Administrator to Turn Flash OFF. Press the ENTER key to dismiss the window.

6. Run Everqest II.

7. After you've logged out of EQII, simply right click the the batch file and select Run As Administrator to Turn Flash ON. Press the ENTER key to dismiss the window.

I wrote and tested this using Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit, but the batch file is designed to work in both 32bit and 64 bit versions of Windows 2000/XP/Vista/7. I hope it makes your life a little easier!

I appreciate everyone posting work-arounds for this. Though, I do not like ones where I'm constantly changing things for my own browser to function properly.

I've updated my game using the proper client, made sure my zone alarm wasn't blocking it, and did a full scan.

My ticket is constantly being updated, and it does seem to be a Flash problem. It is zam that causes my game to crash.

I also appreciate the tech support team helping me with my ticket.

I hope it gets fixed soon!

I haven't applied or tried any of the work arounds, but I've had this issue for at least a month as well. And like the previous post Zam seems to crash a lot for me when using the in game browser. Anyway, for now I don't mind TOO much having to go in and out of windowed mode to bring up Firefox or IE and then bring up EQ2traders or Zam, but yes I'd love it if the brower in game worked as well.
