View Full Version : gts250 to gtx580 upgrade causing unstable fps **SOLVED - By reinstalling Windows 7**

EDIT Mar 20th -- Looks like reinstalling Windows 7 and thus clearing out the crud solved my problem.

Hi,

I have just upgraded my vid card from a gts250 to a gtx580. Aside from a driver install and higher end psu nothing else has changed in my system.

With the gts250 is was getting stable frame rates around 50-60 in a slightly cusomized "high quality". Without changing the video settings I was getting 70-80 fps with the gtx580 standing still but it could drop as low as 3-10 when I started moving.

I changed to a stock "high performance" video setting and was getting 100+ fps standing still but it would still drop down to sub 20 fps when moving and when lots of other characters were around. This was all tested in Thurgadin mosty around the crafting area.

Can anyone please tell me what I should be looking at to help solve this. I did read over some of the stickied posts about graphics being cpu heavy in this engine etc.

The rest of my system is:

Asus P6T

Intel i7-920

CoolerMaster 850W with +12V on single 66A rail

6GB DDR3

Win7 Ultimate 64bit

Please let me know if I can provide any other info.

When switching hardware in Windows 7, make sure you are running the Windows Experience Index again from Start > Right-Click Computer > Properties > Windows Experience Index > Update. May not be the culprit to your loss in performance but it was an issue for me recently when upgrading.

That is not to say there isn't optimizing with locations such as Thurgadin that need to be done, and there is an ongoing issue with those locations and the SOGA models for some, but not all, customers.

From here, go ahead and post your DXDIAG information. Top 3 sections only, System/Display/Sound Devices.

Hmm, I think I'd try pulling the card again, blowing out the mothboard slot, and check for any bent connectors. Might be a piece of dust slipped in. Maybe just re-seating the card and the power connections. The 850 watt PS seems a little low (I could be wrong I haven't seen the specs on the 580), I would think you'd want 1000 Watt or higher for a card like that but I don't know what else you're running in the system.

Have you tested the FPS on any other newer games that are more graphicly demanding then EQ2 like COD or Crysis2? EQ2 doesn't really use graphic cards as effectively as newer games.

It might be you just got a bad card.

In DA2 there is an easy dropdown option to select dx9 or dx11 as the Renderer. Is there anything similar in EQ2, possibly a ini file setting?

Would this have anything to do with me now using a DX11 card on a Win7 system? Before my gts250 was DX10 rated.

Feather

I decided to just reinstall Windows 7 up from a drive format. This seems to have fixed things. I had noticed that NVidia's Endless City Demo was crashing in testing so figured it was windows registry crud (or simillar) or another bad card. That demo is now also running smooth and I'm glad I don't have to exchange a second card.

Game looks great on a gtx580 btw

Thanks for the help and suggestions along the way.

Feather
