Just started playing a pally to see if I like it... Have played a warden and inquis to about 30 as well. I thought the pally was going to be this healing machine like the SK is a DPS machine... Nope.

My melee warden does more damage... everything on my warden hits harder and I have just about as many buttons to press for damage. Warden heals better too... paladin heals are a god [Removed for Content] joke! 40 second cooldown? 20 second cooldown? 1 minute cooldown on shield (not that great at that)

I understand pallies just got nerfed? Why? They are horrible right now. [Removed for Content] weak damage and non-existant healing.

I've been wondering the same thing. I've been playing a Monk(6, bruiser(56), and a conj (27) the past few weeks. I decided to make a pally a few days ago, got him to lvl27 and 42aa's and it is so slow going. I'm in MC and all adept lvl spells atm. I wasn't going to start getting anything higher than adept till 30's since usually lvl's go by so fast. But either way, playing th epally is like pulling teeth. I hope it gets better/faster.

If you want a healer, then make a healer, not a fighter.

Then you can complain about poor dps, unless you are a Fury.

honestly.. complaining about classes in the 20s is.. just.. meh... also this class did not get nerfed our heals are finally useful in tanking situations. and everything else about our class is fine too... its not as newb friendly as some is all.

Like Jeal said above but in a different way, this class doesn't really shin until about level 70 or 80. Really 80 - with 200+ AAs. I'm not exagarating on that point either. I am speaking comparativly of course. I felt fairly underpowered compared to SKs and guards and what not until I hit 80. And then, I started pulling rooms, hitting consecrate and watching the numbers fly.

That said, you will never be a DPS class.

I personally really enjoy playing a Paladin; I don't really solo much anymore, mostly tanking in instances - but I did solo my way to 90 nearly a year ago now.

Paladins are by far one of the most AA heavy classes. Some of our top DPS comes from aa's. Also as noted above you do not get holy ground until level 80 and once you get that your dmg should go up considerably. Once you hit that 80 / 200 aa mark you will notice a difference in play definitely.

Sweet, good to know. Basically it's one of those classes that pays off in the long run. I'll stick with it.

I have a lowish paladin (32) and I find that it breezes through the low level content. I am taking my time and level locking every so often to do all I can at a particular level: 22, 27 and now 32. Doing so also allows me to ramp up my AA (currently capped for my level with 175 or so) and spend the time to research my CAs and spells (all are master now). With extra attacks from AA, including 2 AEs, I have no problem with dps. And extra defense from AA compensates for the effective nerf to avoidance from my MC gear (loss of agi) with the recent stat consolidation.

Solo I have taken on 37^^^ named (orange con) and duoed with a similarly geared templar we have killed 40^^^ named (orange con) and even 41 and 42 trash heroics (red con). This is obviously way beyond what was originally intended for characters of our level - but it is fun. With a decent amount of AA I think that any class should be able to achieve similar results.

So my advice for your new paladin would be to level lock for a bit to work on some key AA abilities: Full strength line for Avenger, Hammer Ground from stamina is a useful AE - you can go further into stamina for increased crit chance and/or the agility line for Trample. Smite Evil from Paladin page is a very nice AE, Blocking Mastery also from Paladin page is good defense and can be further enhanced by Phalanx from Shadows later on. Knight's Stance from Shadows is another key one to have as a goal to increase your dps.

While working on your AA try to get some MC gear. Despite recent stat changes it is still the best gear for low level characters. Also try to get some key CAs/spells first to expert and then research to master - research is pretty quick at low levels.

I look forward to the high level play described by the other posters, but I am not in a hurry to get there. I really enjoy my paladin. Sure we are not top healers or top dps, but we are not intended to be. But with appropriate gear and AA we can do very nicely solo - strong defense, with decent dps and the ability to self ward and heal - what's not to like

Oh well, im not scared in beeing not a top dpsler.

At the very begin, pala can be suffering, true. But at the endgame, i have no problem holding agro against a hole raid, with high dps, i stay as long as almost any other class and i do almost the the same damage

As mentioned above, pala is no beginner class at all But it can be a fine class, if you dont need to be a roxxer

As i sayed several times, you dont notice a paladin, but you notice, if he´s not around

Yea ive came to the conclusion that im always gonna do [Removed for Content] dps no matter what gear im using.

of course i figured as much when i started paladins have never really done damage in any mmo ive played.

they are meant to be tanks. with some healing ability.

but in my opinion all of the healing abilities aint so hot either!

but i do love my pally!

one of the best classes in the game i care not what others say!

and for any who say it takes no skill to play a paladin well they are sadly mistaken.

To be honest, Paladins are actually one of the best solo classes in the game. I will say that it is more important to understand your AA then you would for other classes. However It gets much better later in game.

At about 52 my paladin parse was around 2500 dps. The class is amazing againt large pack of mobs, with achivements you can get 5-6 open blue aoe.

I played a warden and a mystic before, till i tried a paladin i was thinking that the game was balanced, It is not, my paladin solo 4-6 time faster.

tips (obvious ones):

use a shield

use always the defensive stance

get strike evil and holy ground

put as many aa as you can in punishments.

get crusader aura 10/10-- you get there a rune stronger than the one of a mystic 00

get damage reduction from shadow tree.

btw now at 77 : crusader aura = 500 dng perma rune, paladin blessing 220

So i have a 720 dmg refreshing rune on me 24/24.
