Something odd happened overnight and my sound has quit working. The problem is system wide, but I thought I would ask here in case anyone had suggestions.

At first, it wasn't recognizing that my headphone were plugged in or that I had front jacks. I deleted then reinstalled my sound drivers.

Realtek HD Audio Manager LOOKS like it sees the headphone and mic, but no sound is coming through. If I unplug then replug the headset/mic, I don't get the "Hardware Detected" popup, which makes me think that the jack ports are not being "seen" by the system.

------------------System Information------------------Time of this report: 1/14/2011, 12:14:53 Operating System: Windows Vista™ Home Premium (6.0, Build 6002) Service Pack 2 (6002.vistasp2_gdr.100608-0458) Language: English (Regional Setting: English)System Manufacturer: MICRO-STAR INTERNATIONAL CO.,LTD System Model: MS-7529 BIOS: Default System BIOS Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q8200 @ 2.33GHz (4 CPUs), ~2.3GHz Memory: 4094MB RAM Page File: 1476MB used, 6887MB available Windows Dir: C:Windows DirectX Version: DirectX 11 DxDiag Version: 7.00.6002.18107 32bit Unicode-------------Sound Devices------------- Description: Speakers (Realtek High Definition Audio) Default Sound Playback: Yes Default Voice Playback: Yes Hardware ID: HDAUDIOFUNC_01&VEN_10EC&DEV_0888&SUBSYS_14627529&REV_1000 Manufacturer ID: 1 Product ID: 100 Type: WDM Driver Name: RTKVHD64.sys Driver Version: 6.00.0001.6278 (English) Driver Attributes: Final Retail WHQL Logo'd: n/a Date and Size: 12/30/2010 11:59:18, 2690280 bytes Other Files: Driver Provider: Realtek Semiconductor Corp. HW Accel Level: Basic Cap Flags: 0x0 Min/Max Sample Rate: 0, 0Static/Strm HW Mix Bufs: 0, 0 Static/Strm HW 3D Bufs: 0, 0 HW Memory: 0 Voice Management: No EAX(tm) 2.0 Listen/Src: No, No I3DL2(tm) Listen/Src: No, NoSensaura(tm) ZoomFX(tm): No Description: Realtek Digital Output (Realtek High Definition Audio) Default Sound Playback: No Default Voice Playback: No Hardware ID: HDAUDIOFUNC_01&VEN_10EC&DEV_0888&SUBSYS_14627529&REV_1000 Manufacturer ID: 1 Product ID: 100 Type: WDM Driver Name: RTKVHD64.sys Driver Version: 6.00.0001.6278 (English) Driver Attributes: Final Retail WHQL Logo'd: n/a Date and Size: 12/30/2010 11:59:18, 2690280 bytes Other Files: Driver Provider: Realtek Semiconductor Corp. HW Accel Level: Basic Cap Flags: 0x0 Min/Max Sample Rate: 0, 0Static/Strm HW Mix Bufs: 0, 0 Static/Strm HW 3D Bufs: 0, 0 HW Memory: 0 Voice Management: No EAX(tm) 2.0 Listen/Src: No, No I3DL2(tm) Listen/Src: No, NoSensaura(tm) ZoomFX(tm): No---------------------Sound Capture Devices--------------------- Description: Microphone (Realtek High Definition Audio) Default Sound Capture: Yes Default Voice Capture: Yes Driver Name: RTKVHD64.sys Driver Version: 6.00.0001.6278 (English) Driver Attributes: Final Retail Date and Size: 12/30/2010 11:59:18, 2690280 bytes Cap Flags: 0x0 Format Flags: 0x0

I was just comparing setting to my realtek set up and they are very much the same. Mine is ASUS and yours is MSi but for the most part we are on the same page, my head phones work fine.

I would suggest pluging your headphones into the back to see if the maybe the front jacks have failed. You can also plug your head phones into a cd player or some thing to confirm they are not the problem.

For kicks I updated my drivers and after the uninstall windows 7 decided it would do it for me... bad idea. Make sure you have automatic driver updates disabled so you can choose the driver YOU want, not what ever windows wants. While in realtek click the little "i" down in the lower left and make sure the driver you have installed is the one you wanted.

Just a thought

Hope you get this sorted

I am beginning to think my sound card is blown.

I use the same setup at home. Everything you are doing appears to be correct. You could try setting the Realteak Digital Output as your default and seeing if that makes a difference (just for the sake of testing).

Also, do you get Windows sound through the headphones? Let's say for instance you pull up the volume control and begin clicking, do you hear the beeps through the headphones?
