I rolled an Illy and he is lvl 12 now. I just got back into EQ2 from WoW and a long time off. I played at first release and in beta, that's how long it has been. I am trying to figure out what mage class I want to play. I am assuming since so much time as passed I need a class that is solo friendly. I also want to be very much wanted in groups and group friendly. However I do not want to play a healer or tank. I would want to be either utility or dps however I do want to be at the top of my game and have the ability to be close to the top in terms of performance once I learn my toon. Is Illy for me or should I go coercer or wizzy or warlock? I am assuming necros and conjurers don't have alot to offer a group in in game content?

I also here that at end game CC is useless?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks so much!

Site

Welcome back!

As it stands right now if you want to be at the tops in terms of DPS then choose a different mage class besides an enchanter. With the release of SF illys and coercers have taken a significant dip in the DPS department but we are still tops when it comes to regen, our most important ability. That alone makes us desired but that's not to say we can't DPS... with the right gear, spell cast order, group make up and skill we can do somewhat respectable but no where near tier 1 DPS.

In the end game CC is useless. I only hit it if I've been jcapped and must hit another spell to keep perpetuality up and running. CC is only really useful if you're soloing tough situations or in a less than capable group. However, everyone is pretty much used to playing without CC so no one has the discipline to back off and leave a mezzed mob alone.

I play and illy. I've played since release and for the last year I've been raiding end game content. I love it but I do despair a bit over the lack of DPS as that's fun to me. Prior to SF I could compete better but not anymore. I'm still having fun though many illys have move on to other classes. The devs have promised some changes with the next release in a few months that sound like they will improve our position but we won't know what that means until we get there.

Illys can solo but it takes longer to kill things. Other mages can as well and while they might kill a little faster it's still quite dangerous. Now my warden, he can kill a lot of things. It takes forever as well but the ability to heal reduces the risk and allows for different challenges.

Still we can do what most solo quests requires with decent speed after lvl 70.

So illus can solo good but not as fast as some others.

"I also want to be very much wanted in groups and group friendly."

Illus are usually well desiered in groups. A normal group setup nowdays is Tank, Healer, Enchanter, Bard, DPS, DPS. Sometimes 3 DPS and either enchanter or bard, Due to lack o the other one commonly. So looking at it there are 6 classes that can fill the tank slot (Some might say 4 counting brawlers as DPS) There are 6 classes that can fill the healer spot. There are 10 classes that can fill each DPS slot, There are two classes that can fill the bard slot, and there are two classes that can fill the enchanter slot. So on shared place with bards enchanters are the msot desiereble for groups (In overall)

Also in raids enchanters are well desiered as it is common to aim for one enchanter in every group.

So illus meets your requirement for being desiered in groups

"top in terms of performance"

Depending on what you do mean with performance, If you mean DPS then no... We are not top DPS

We are top power regain (Coercers are better currently, But we illus are not bad either) and we have some of the best buffs around (Maintained and activated combat buffs). So by filling the roles as a enchanter and still be able to do the prity cool damage we are capebleof (With right gear, group... and so on ) We are kinda cool!

So you will probebly not be top DPS, But you can be great utility and do great DPS for being utility and suprice your group, And it is allways ways to become even better at

"Is Illy for me or should I go coercer or wizzy or warlock?"

Maybe it is... Maybe you are a coercer.. only you know. currently Coercers (in general) do more damage then illus. Devs have stated that illus will have some changed with the comming expansions to make us on par with coercers. Coercers are currently also better power regain then us, But we are by no way bad at it!

Wizzards and warlocks are top DPS, They bring some cool things to their group aswell but their purpose is being really really big DPS. They solo well but group desirebility is generally lower as they fill the DPS slot that there are many classes that can fill good

"necros and conjurers don't have alot to offer"

They do! With recent expansions summoners can eb awesome DPS and bring some intresting toys or their group to.. on't unerestimate them! They still fill the DPS slot so desirebility is as otehr DPS (I think ) Summoners are really good soloers.

"I also here that at end game CC is useless"

CC in the shape of mezzing is prity much, yes. Stuns, Stifle and dazle used right can be helpfull even in groups. But CC is not in the spotlight as it was before ROK. Yet it is not unusefull

I hope this helps you some and that you find a class good for you
