View Full Version : Being dropped to character select when idle for more then a few minutes

Ok, so I was getting dropped to character select yesterday A LOT and I thought it might be my ISP, because my brother was also dropping at the same time and we are both on Rogers Cable. However, we are over 400 miles apart in different cities. It would happen any time and while doing anything. And our voice chat would work fine through the crahses.

I also noticed last night that while I was in our GH, I dropped to character select. So I logged back in and went back to getting my dinner. When I came back I was dropped again. I was only inactive about 5 mins though... not the 30 mins that the instances usually get shut down. So I logged back in and waited and sure enough, I was dropped again about 10 mins later.

Today, I logged another alt in on a different server and I have been dropped again twice this morning for no reason.

I did some checking and there's nothing wrong with my ISP connection or my computer that i can see. Web surfs fine, I downloaded a movie overnight, other MMP games work fine... no extra lag that I can see.

Something has changed since the hotfix yesterday morning. I very rarely have issues with this game and when I do, it's almost always when something was changed with a patch.

I usually have no problems but starting after I think Tuesdays patch to fix a crash issue I keep getting dropped to char select screen, sometimes on zoneing many times fighting have even taken some deaths due to this. My ISP seems to be having no issues and its only been a problem the last two days.

Ok, this isn't just when I am idle. it's now happened another 5 times in less then 2 hours.

What's weird is it happens at the exact same time for me and my brother. We're not doing anything together though... both in different zones doing some stuff and just chatting over the voice and we drop to character select at the same time. Happens at anytime.

We get about 10 seconds warning too. The game becomes unresponsive (can't cast for example) and the F11 meter pegs (blue bars go right to top. But we're still cahtting on the Voice Chat just fine and then we both drop to character select and can log back in right away.

This has been happening consistently since the hotfix yesterday morning and it's getting extremely annoying!

I did some more troubleshooting and it seems like it's a problem with the internet on SOE's end. The last couple of times me and my brother crashed, I tried loading the forum here and couldn't. but I could surf anywhere else just fine.

We're both at the point right now were we are going to shelve the game for a few days because this is becoming very aggravating.

I am also seeing that each time I get booted to char select I am unable to load SoE page , I get timed out message. At the same time I can go to unrealated web sites and they load instantly.

Following some advice from another thread I did a Pingpath to the servers.
It looks like both of you are located in the same city with the same ISP. I recommend showing your test results to your ISP to see what they can find. On hops 2, 12 and 19 all packets are lost.

I doubt very much it's anything local to do with my ISP. Maybe one of their main hubs or something but my brother and I live in different cities over 400 miles apart and we both crash to character select at exactly the same time.... all the time. Any absolutely nothing else is effected on our ends. i surf and download and run P2P connections with people all over the world and it's all working good.

Reminds me of the time years ago when Alternet used to act up a lot and they were a major hub i had to go through to get to SOE's servers.

Also, the really wierd part of this and one of the things that makes me think it's game related, is that we just loose enough packets to drop to character select. We never get kicked out of the game and, like I said before, nothing else on our ends seems affected. Usually, my downloads and P2P stuff will hiccup a bit when there's packet lose.

I was discussing this with my brother just now and another piece of info that is very strange is this...

Normally, when you time out or your ISP pukes, you go link dead in the game. From your perspective, you are still moving and stuff until the screen goes but when you log back in, you could be anywhere.... and dead or alive if you were aggroed when you crashed.

However, in these crashes, you always come back exactly where you were when the screen blanked and you dropped to the character select screen. Several times today, I was training mobs in Sol's Eye and I always logged back in to be at the exact same spot I was when I crashed.

The other oddity is that I can always log right back into the game immediately after getting to the character select screen. Normally, when you have a link dead situation, your toon remains in game for a min or so as an NPC and you have to wait to log back in. IIRC, this was to prevent people pulling their network cables to avoid a death and some other exploits.

I've had a couple of instances where it gives me the "You already have a character in the world" message, but on the vast majority I too can get right back in the game.

I've run tracert on the last two crashes and they both have timeouts at that same hop, so I'm going to assume that it's a network issue for now and that it's just strange the way the client reacts (perhaps the voice chat server takes a different route, for instance).

Seems to be working ok today. I had some appointments this morning so I logged one of my toons in and parked him then went out and he was still logged in when I came home, 3 hours later.

Probably was a problem with the internet somewhere. Hopefully, no more of that nonsense.
