My sincere apologies if this has been brought up before, but I read some of the backstory of how the dead roamed the streets of Maj'Dul for about a week back in the day and then just disappeared... Did we ever find out what it is exactly they were looking for?

The NOTD is actually the undead searching Maj'Dul for the Ewer.. and really the only reason they're searching maj'dul is because its the closest city on the Isle of Ro iirc. Theres an in-game book that talks about how much fun the children had romping and running around the undead zombies and the like rumaging through peoples pantries and closets looking for the Ewer...

Cristanos had it.

This is why originally (if you go back and re-read NOTD from a few years back when Neriak was out) She outright refused to allow her citizens to celebrate the Nights of the Dead for fear any close undead may hear the call of thier desert bound bretheren and go searching through Neriak for the Ewer.... and at the time she did have it. She doesnt anymore as the followers of the Peacock have returned it to her in the Silent City.... though watching undead shuffle around made the celebration stick.
