Background - Recently returned player (whose highest char was 52) and had never played a melee class before so I'm learning as I go. My Brig is up to 80 but it's been almost entirely solo so I've been more worried about stun timings with Walk the Plank than maximizing DPS.

So, I just loaded up the Profit UI and trying to use the Auto Attack to keep from stepping on my own dps and it got me thinking.

1) What type of weapons are we looking for, slow that hit hard, or fast that do less damage. Fast in primary, slow in secondary?

2) Are there test dummies in the cities somewhere in order for us to test dps rotations. I know in that setting we're missing all of the raid buffs, but it can still give me a baseline for getting better with auto attacks.

3) Is there a way to save a combat log or a mod that will parse the combat log.

4) Is there a built in penalty for the offhand weapon from an auto attack standpoint for either swing speed or damage done? or are the calc's the same for OH as MH weapons.

I know these are pretty noobish, but thanks much in advance.

1) What type of weapons are we looking for, slow that hit hard, or fast that do less damage. Fast in primary, slow in secondary?

Sadly, SoE decided to do away with variable weapon speeds several expansions ago. You'll be using 4.0 delay weapons after you've gain a few more levels. That is all.

2) Are there test dummies in the cities somewhere in order for us to test dps rotations. I know in that setting we're missing all of the raid buffs, but it can still give me a baseline for getting better with auto attacks.

Test dummies are only available in guildhalls at the moment. If you ask in chat channels, I'm sure you'll be able to find a hall with publicly accessable dummies.

3) Is there a way to save a combat log or a mod that will parse the combat log.

The /log command is available, and there is a tickbox somewhere in the options which turns the same log on/off. Several parsers are available, but ACT is by far the most popular. http://advancedcombattracker.com/

Sadly, no in-game parser mods. However ACT can be configured to allow you to easily paste parses in your chat channels.

4) Is there a built in penalty for the offhand weapon from an auto attack standpoint for either swing speed or damage done? or are the calc's the same for OH as MH weapons.

No speed penalty. Last I heard there was some damage penalty on the offhand weapon, but I may be out of the loop there...watching my own swings I see little or no difference between the two.

Fast in primary, slow in secondary?

4s is the optimal delay at max level and with a haste item. You do however have the option for faster (or slower) weapons. Mastercrafted come in 1.6, 3, 4, 5s delay. Fabled/legendary come in 3s, 4s, and 6s varieties (though 6s are rare and geared towards tanks). Whatever you decide, make sure you have the same delay in both mainhand and offhand, or you'll never manage to time your autoattacks successfully.

2) Are there test dummies in the cities somewhere in order for us to test dps rotations. I know in that setting we're missing all of the raid buffs, but it can still give me a baseline for getting better with auto attacks.

While you may have trouble finding a test dummy to use if you don't have one in your guild hall, there is a training wall in the Kunzar Jungle that was often used before guild halls came out as a way to test out different specs/pieces of gear and to work on your CA rotation.

3) Is there a way to save a combat log or a mod that will parse the combat log.

As previously mentioned, ACT is the best and most used. You can parse real time while playing or if your computer can't hack it, you can load the log file while you are offline.

4) Is there a built in penalty for the offhand weapon from an auto attack standpoint for either swing speed or damage done? or are the calc's the same for OH as MH weapons.

There is not a reduction to damage, however both your main hand and off hand will have a slight speed reduction as cost to dual wielding.
