Well since this quest is going live tomorrow, can someone explain to me how and why dartain and alkabor are now one person?

I believe there was a prior thread here in History and Lore that discusses it.

http://forums.station.sony.com/eq2/...topic_id=470734

But it's also fully explained in the Footsteps of Dartain signature quest. In a nutshell, Dartain and Al'Kabor are fused together as one entity, Dragonball Z style, because Dartain wanted something from Al'Kabor relating to the Void, but after fusing together they are now working together to solve the Age's End prophecy.

If there's no proof the duckstick ever existed, then there's no problem. There wouldn't need to be a retcon because Dartain was never involved in the quest for a fictional duckstick that never existed.

He's talking about the EQ2 necro epic, in which Dartain plays a major role.

Also regarding Dartain, I believe he didn't even exist in EQ1.

Hmm while not having a necromancer so i cant say what the Necro Epic specificly says I've done the Footsteps of Dartain quest twice. It's said in times past Dartain would go into the Hole and dissapear for long lengths of time. One of which was so long he was thought dead because of the decades that had went by.

I'm wondering if after we fired up the Ultera Spires during KoS he was able to leave Ultera on one of those massively long journeys (going to Neriak in the meantime for the Necro Epic) and then returning as it says he does in the quest.

In a nutshell, when you start working on the Necro epic, one of the first steps is to go to Neriak and visit Dartain (I think he's the one who actually gives the quest itself) for information and to acquire Vazaelle's skull. He's apparently doing research upstairs in the mage's library and doesn't like being interrupted. You challenge him to a duel and win (yeah, I know...) then you go scurrying around Norrath to get the rest of Vazaelle's remains. Later on, when you're working on the second quest to upgrade the fabled to the mythical, you return to Dartain for one of the essences needed to complete the quest.

Unfortunately, some time after I finished both quests, my former HD decided it was time to become a paperweight, so I have no logs of the dialogue anymore

Quick update after the quest.

Eventually, the whole quest series are sums up of the past lore theories since the Book of Sunder lore by Vhalen, ends up with the Doomsday Calendar and the sigil pointing each runes/signs. So if you are not familiar with those things, doing the quest helps, for us who knew it before it's like an official prove of our theories.

At last, the quest is leading us to Velious, where is our next expansion pack.

In the most recent quest, this NPC refers to "Firona Vie" and "Eurd", which are mis-spelled versions of famous Norrathian personages. As it's unlikely that SOE would mis-spell the names of two of its famous characters, I'm thinking this may be a hint that this person is not who they say they are... or maybe that SOE outsourced quest writing to india.

It wasn't the only one I spotted while doing the quest.

"You find a stone rune-engraved stone fall out".

I doubt a fake would be capable of replicating the same appearance of Dartain and Al'Kabor, able to recall all their past memories and change between the two every so often.
