View Full Version : Does EQ2 run on Windows 7-64 bit?

Hi there,

I've been searching the forums and can't really find a solid answer. I'm currently running Windows XP 32. I've upgraded my computer over the last 2 years. I have a pretty decent system, but I'm really wanting to move to Windows 7-64 bit and a solid state drive.

From what I've read it sounds like some people have installed EQ2 on Win 7-64 w/o any issues, while others have had major issues (some from video driver issues). I've already checked all of my hardware and I know it's all 64 bit compatible. Now....will EQ2 install and run on it? Not in compatibility mode, just plain ol Win 7-64. Does it work?

Thanks in advance!

-Parabola

Works fine for me.

Works fine for me, but I always recommend installing it somewhere like C:/Sony/Everquest II or anywhere outside of program files or ProgramData. That cuts down on potential problems.

multibox on a Windows 7 64 bit install with little or no issues. Although I do subscribe to the rule of installing outside of Program Files.

Thanks for the quick reply guys. Interesting on installing it on a different path other than Program Files. Did you guys have issues with that specifically with EQ2 or just a rule of thumb that you use?

Windows pretty much requires Administrator privileges if you need to write into C:Program Files. That is why we've moved the default installation directory under C:ProgramData. You can put it almost anywhere you want (some folders are restricted, such as C:Windows).

The game certainly runs on Windows 7-64. Several of us have this configuration for our primary machines.

-dan

In early beta phases for Vista it was about the only way to get it to run reliably. It works, it is reliable so I just stay with it, besides it makes it a lot easier to backup the system

Win 95? I use program files for applications that aren't games, games I put in their own folders to make them easy to access and (ever since Vista) to also prevent UAC-type issues.

I have a hard drive specifically for games, so I always install there.

Having said that, I dual-box on Win7 x64 Ultimate with no problems at all.

Thanks for the responses everyone. I'll be buying my copy of Win7 64 along with my SSD within a couple of weeks. Can't wait to see how this game runs on it since EQ2 seems very drive intensive. I'm thinking the load times for zones will be pretty fast. We'll see.

It did until yesterday's update - now I'm having that DirectX 9 .dll error.

I was actually thinking of putting Win 7 64 and EQ2 on the SSD and everything else on my WD raptor. I think TRIM should help with the wear and tear of the SSD. Does EQ2 write that much info? Other than updates obviously. I would think it's mostly reads vs writes no?

It is just personal preference to keep everything except the OS off a SSD

You might have to update any shortcuts you have pointing to the old spot, but that'll be about it, you won't have to actually 'reinstall' anywhere.

Does EQ2 write that much info? Other than updates obviously. I would think it's mostly reads vs writes no?

Unless you purchased an SSD with a extremely low write endurance (100,000 or less per block which are pretty much nonexistant nowadays), you shouldn't have to ever worry about having any problems. One test I saw (at a write endurance rating of 2 million cycles and most SSDs are around 1-5 million cycles) calculated it would take 51 years of constant writing to the disc at full speed to wear it out.

I would try the full file scan if its still on the launcher anywhere.
Works on my computer system. Just installed EQ2 last night on my computer, had to install DX9 as well since EQ2 is not DX 11 compatable.

My previous comment was only really directed towards the RightInTwo's concern about "wear and tear" on an SSD. I wasn't really trying to make any comment on whether or not one should or shouldn't use an SSD for anything beyond the OS.

This seems very odd to me, 3 weeks ago I received my new PC, WiN-7 64 bit gaming rig all the latest stuff blah blah.

I networked my old PC / New PC together, copied EQ2 from Vista machine to new WiN 7 machine, I put it in the Program Data folder as I read that I should put it there.

I never updated or downgraded DX11 to DX9, unless EQ2 does this automatically (I don't think it does and my system shows that I have DX11).
