This is kind of a silly question, and I do apologize if it's been asked before, but I'm curious if anyone knows about the various climates of different areas in Norrath. I ask because I'm writing something for a friend set in Norrath... and... yea... Anyways...Some areas speak for themsleves, like Sinking Sands and Moors, but others like Antonica, Steamfont.. etc I'm not as sure of.There's no one place in paticular I'm interested in knowing, though any info on climates for ANY of the zones that aren't so obvious would be greatly apperciated. Thanks

Antonica would probably be a lot like north america in the area about midway up the east coast. It is near the ocean of course, but also near mountains. Lots of green plants and trees means it probably rains a reasonable amount there.

Steamfont is hard to say but I get the feeling it is a more arid environment, perhaps more like Colorado along the front range of the Rockies.

The main reason for the lack of weather (other then the old odd sandstorm and even rarer rain) is the Sea of Sand a permanent offshore sandstorm/hurricane(probably part of Ro's Curse) with The remaining part of Ro in the eye. The only ways in or out of Ro are by ship (That goes through part of the old Tunnels of the Shady Swashbuckler) Or by Sky-ships (Which get the altitude to clear the storm.)

Kunark seems a lot like Australia with a mix of Africa.

Halas is large Iceberg that has been Blessed by Marr, it also has large deposits of Ancient Velium.

These are mostly guesses as the game doesn't really support true seasons but they are mentioned somewhat in the lore.

Here's how I see it.

Karan - North American coastal temperate

D'Lere - Commonlands are desert savanah (western United States, anything west of the Mississippi prior to 20th century), Darklight and Nektulos temperate forest

Zek - Deforested Forest, formerly temperate.

Enchanted Lands - Grassy temperate forest

Frostfang Sea, Everfrost, Velious - Arctic, Tundra, & Antarctic, respectively. Frostfang is just a series of icebergs. Everfrost is reminiscent of northern hemisphere tundras, while Velious is virtually Antarctica.

Lavastorm - Volcano (a real world equivalent doesn't really exist unless you're near an active volcano)

Ro - Sahara Desert and Rocky Mountain desert mountains. Pillars of Flame could be anywhere in the Sanoran Desert.

Overrealm - Your guess is as good as mine. It looks like mostly desert mountains, with some tropical or subtropical forests depending where in the Overrealm you are.

Faydwer - Mostly temperate forest.

Kunark - Kylong Plains is Tropical Savanah and Tropical Mountains, Fens of Nathsar is subtropical savanah and desert mountains, Kunzar Jungle is Tropical Jungle, Jarsath Wastes is subtropical savanah

Ykesha - Swamp

Odus - Combination of mountain desert and temperate

I imagine each area has "seasons" like real life does, but they aren't coded into the game. Their absense would be strictly a gameplay thing.

It doesn't directly relate to climates, but when Vhalen gave us a description of the various seas and oceans around Norrath, he mentioned how the Coldwind sea off Antonica pretty much lives up to it's name- Cold, choppy waters, much like you would expect to find in the New England area.

Just a musing.

Thanks all for replying... wish I could have thanked you sooner but time hasn't been on my side lately.Anyways, another question or two... or... something...Having traveled to around the US alot, coming across different climates and what not... I was wondering which area of the US (or anywhere, really) Thundering Steppes might be compared to? It looks like an area that'd be relatively cool and 'barren.' I keep thinking Montana but cooler...Also, being from San Diego... would it be fair to say the Commonlands are kinda like Southern California's climate... dry and warm in the summer... dry and cool during the winters? Nek Forest and Darklight being like the Kentucky-Tennesse regions... mild tempetures with 99% humidity? And finally, would it be fair to say Lesser/Greater Faydwer, New Tunaria and Steamfont to a point would be like the Pacific Northwest?

I know it's all just speculation for the most part when it comes to some of the zones since there isn't an ingame mechanic for weather, etc... but even speculation is helpful.

Thanks again all.

Now that the Plains of Karana have turn into the Thundering Steppes, I would Imagine them more like the Northern Rockies, just with more rain and minus the snow and altitude.

Also food for thought, in EQLive, It snows in Gfay. Or at least did. It had snow particle affects when I was running around a few years ago.

I always remembered Gfay as something like a mountainous, redwood and pine/alpine forest in the mountains. After all, it was/is surrounded by Butcherblock MOUNTAINS and Steamfont MOUNTAINS. Lfay, to me, always seemed like a more foothills/valley-like, deciduous forest. And if you ever been to Colorado, LP seems more like the foothills that smooth out into the hilly plains. Steamfont has always reminded me of an exagerated Yellowstone. Butcherblock reminded me of being deep into the Rockies, near the treeline and on a coast.

Again, just more rainy, with no snow.

Also, being from San Diego... would it be fair to say the Commonlands are kinda like Southern California's climate... dry and warm in the summer... dry and cool during the winters? No, Commonlands is savannah. Think Africa. It used to lie next to the Desert of Ro. Hot during the summer, less hot during the winter.

Nek Forest and Darklight being like the Kentucky-Tennesse regions... mild tempetures with 99% humidity? And finally, would it be fair to say Lesser/Greater Faydwer, New Tunaria and Steamfont to a point would be like the Pacific Northwest? I also didn't see this, but yes, similar to the northwest for Faydwer. I imagine Nek and DLW more like CO, WY, UT forests. Just less mountainous. Nek and DLW were land locked before the shattering, and also bordered CL.

I know it's all just speculation for the most part when it comes to some of the zones since there isn't an ingame mechanic for weather, etc... but even speculation is helpful.

Thanks again all.

Actually it hasn't rained in Thundering Steppes ever, and the Antonica (Antonica at one time had rain but the rain was lost when the Guild Halls came in).

^ The fact that the developers never bothered to change the coding for rain effects so that it could rain or snow in any other zone but Antonica, Commonlands, and everything inside Qeynos and Freeport does not mean that it has never rained in those zones. Thundering Steppes is just the type of environment who would be succeptible to thunder storms, flooding, and heavy squalls.

I could've sworn I've experienced rain in both Antonica and the Commonlands since the GHs were put in too.

Each time I'm in Commonlands, it rains. Which explains why it's a desert-like savannah.. *cough*

Remember when the Overlord made it rain 3 months strait in Freeport some years ago? All my chars where in Freeport, I never saw the sun for months.
