I am just wondering how important other people consider it for inquisitors to be dpsing (or trying to do as much damage as possible) in heroic content?

I ask because currently, I always put up my heal stance, I switch off yaulp, i only cast tenacity on myself if there are no other melee classes left to put it on, i am specced shield ally/holy shield and very rarely group without 1h and shield equipped.

That said, I know that inquisitors should be capable of doing at least SOME damage, so I try to make sure I melee (which I know can also help with heals through combative healing). If I can't stay in melee range I try to keep repentance/vengeance up if I can.

Should I just give up trying to avoid getting hurt and bring out my 2h? I should be able to heal myself through the damage as well as the rest of the group right?

Do what works honestly.

You can make up for a poor tank or just a nubly group in general by "over"-healing. The extra procs and reactives can allow you to recover easily when things don't go as expected.

If the group is steamrolling along, it's nice to throw out some DPS, but I don't think it's really that important as long as you aren't just slacking.

If "heal botting" is more your style, you can look for items that proc DPS-ish buffs off of healing spells. There are quite a few of them available nowadays, at least for raiders. Tyrannus wrist, that bardish round shield from Wing 2 of Underfoot, the earring off ez-mode Construct in Underfoot, and the Icy Keep BP just to name some off the top of my head.

There are at least a few available outside of raids, too. There are lesser versions of the Tyrannus wrist (one is from the RoK version of that underwater zone in Fens), and there is also a charm from Research Halls that procs an accuracy and resistability buff on heals.

Our main role is to keep the group alive and support the damage of the group. Only if we can do that fine the next step is to try to do some DPS ourself. So if you are in a group you don't know it is best to start out defensive and if everything is OK you might try to switch over to a two handed weapon and the DPS stance. If you are still able to keep the group alive you can keep meleeing. If you are to fight a named you have doubts that you can handle in dps stance just change back to heal stance and 1hand + shield. In the end an Inquisitor doing 100 dps but keeping his group alive is a lot better then an Inquisitor doing 10k dps that lets people die 'cause he is dpsing and not healing.

Thanks for your comments.

I've decided I'm going to spec out of shield ally/holy shield and go for the base attack multiplier in the stamina line to try and boost my damage. I will miss holy shield, but its probably not really needed on an inquis who only runs group content.
