My understanding was you get a spell, we will call it Vampire Bats since I play a conj. It now begins at level 10 as an apprentice spell. It appears on your hotbar and as you upgrade the spell it gets replaced (Journeyman, Adept, Expert, Master, which has always been the case) and when you receive the next tier of the spell, Vampire Bats II, the apprentice version would automatically replace whatever previous tier version was on your hotbar.

Is this correct?

I believe so. Makes it easier when you are in a quick moving group so when you level, you don't need to drag and remove the old tiers and then put the new one on

There is a general exception however as Smokejumper posted.

SmokeJumper wrote:

The general rule of thumb is that if a spell is upgraded to Expert or above, then it is not replaced by the next update.

Well it's not working for me.

I made a new toon tonight... being lvl 1-6, all my spells were apprentice. Dinged lvl 7, got a II verson of a spell - it went to a new hot bar instead of replacing the original version. Happened to every spell I had when they upgraded to the II version. Happened on my husband's account as well on his new toon.
