That's the ghost of the dragon Jaled Dar. The short answer is he died fighting Ganak in an epic battle between the Iksar (Sebilisian empire, I think) and Dragons (Ring of Scale).

There's a ton of lore out there somewhere that I remember reading, maybe even on these forums. Here's a short re-cap via Wiki: http://eq2.wikia.com/wiki/Iksar_Lore

The Field of Bone is called as such because his battle with Ganak turned the area into a wasteland, and then his body was left there to rot. His actual spirit is confined to the Dragon Necropolis in Velious. What you're seeing there is just his aura eminating from his bones. A spiritual residue of sorts.

He is really big, would be nice if we got to revive him one day .

You MUST aid me. I will have my revenge, and my rest!' You say, 'How can I aid you?' Jaled Dar`s shade says 'You must wake The Sleeper. He is our salvation, he will restore a new golden age to Norrath. It was a terrible mistake to subdue him, jealousy and envy led us to do it. I see all of this clearly now.' You say, 'Who is The Sleeper?' Jaled Dar`s shade says 'Kerafyrm, the best of us, what we should be. We imprisoned him in a timeless slumber aeons ago. I know how to release him, but I am no longer of the flesh, so I cannot do it myself. But you can accomplish this task!'

So who knows ... we might have to fight him on the second part of velious =P but i doubt it, he'll prolly be all forgotten and lonely =( poor poor Jaled Dar ...

One can only wonder if he has possibly become even more deranged over time. First of all the sleeper is currently running free and has amassed a great deal more power. Second is the possibility (if canon) of his Mate (Harla Dar), his daughter (Phara Dar), and his former friend (Trakanon) all being killed recently from player actions...although I suspect that he is not likely to care due to his insanity.

Jalad'Dar in EQ1 blamed Trakanon for his death, he even said as much. (and actually doing the impossible and killing Jalad's Spirit, would interestingly RAISE your faction with Trakanon himself)

He likely wouldn't care one way or the other about Trakanon beyond "oh joy, my murderer is dead, happy happy day!" He MAY or may not (depending on his questionable mental state) care that Phara is dead. Not sure about Harla though.

FYI, for anyone curious, (Alt-Timeline and all that; actually an Alt-Alt-Timeline at that), you can see how the final battle between Ganak and Jalad'Dar went on in the EQLive SoD expansion, in the final Field of Scale raid. Definitly one of the funnest raids I've participated in in a long time.

Timetraveling done in a "Window" looking back such as instances and out of character control (taking another NPC's body and such) is sometimes great storytelling.

Off-topic, ... Trakanon. Is again flesh and blood instead of his undead state from EQ1. Was his curse lifted? Was he privy to some more powerfull magics to undo the state of undeath he was in? Jindrack told us once that he was a great blue dragon before becoming undead... and RoK comes and there he is a huge blue dragon.

What happened during the last 500 years that effected Trakanon turning him back to flesh...

Doesn't matter anymore though since it is old content and since he is assumed to be dead for real now it no longer has to be explained as it is no longer relevant to the plot.
