Folks I just came back to EQ2 after a real long absence, getting back into the game now and enjoying the crafting in particular but I'm having some trouble figuring out the best approach for transmuting and have a few questions. If any of my assumptions are wrong feel free to chiime in any and all help is apprecaited.

1. Apparently I can only break down things that are low level to get my skill up, but my character is around lvl 40 so I need to go back somewhere and get some more low level gear, from what I've read it has to be either mastercrafted or treasured, I tried places liek the wailing caverns and the fallen gate, everythign was greyed out, I got lots of drops along the lines of bones, plant food and such but not one treasured - was I jsut on a bad streak of luck or do they not drop once the mob greys out?

2. Am I correct in assuming that I can xmute anything that is mastercrafted, treasured and equal to my level in transmuting?

3. Is there anything I can get/buy at lvl 40 to provide a bonus to my xmute skill?

4. MY MAIN ASSUMPTION - is that from what I can see it appears that xmute materials would be a great way to make some gold by using a high level character to farm low level instances and then break the stuff down and sell the mats, am I right?

Thanks again for any and all replies.

For #1, visit the Chronomage in your city and get mentored down until the mobs in the level range you want will have color. Then go hog-wild and loot the chests.

For #2, the formula is M = T/5 + 5, where T is your transmuting skill and M is the max level of items you can transmute. So if your current transmuting skill is 25, you can transmute items up to level 10. As for gear, the general rule is Treasured or better, Attuneable and not stackable. For spells, Adepts and better can be transmuted with Adepts transmuting like Treasured gear, Experts like Legendary and Masters like Fabled. There's a couple of items that can boost your transmuting skill, but you'll need to be higher level to get them.

As for #4, yes with caveats. Currently fragments sell for the best prices. And generally only the top two tiers sell for really high prices, for lower tiers check the broker first to see what the market's like.

You can also do what I do - harvest T1 and save the rares you get. Take them back to town and make expert stuff with em. Then transmute the items you made. Tedious and a bit slow but an inexpensive way to work transmuting.

Good advice here OP. I think many of us are experiencing the same as you with the introduction of transmuting to all.

With characters in tier 9 and at 90 I have used the chronomage to go back to the starter zones and have worked my alts through the content they missed while levelling. I often do more than one of the starter zones. New Halas and Timorous Deep are both fine to do with either faction while mentored with the Chronomage. Greater Faydark (Kelethin) and Darklight Woods (Neriak) are safest done only with alts of that alignment.

This way they get the no-trade rewards (often Legendary in tier 8 ) to transmute as well as the mob dropped items. You will find by doing this you will quickly catch up to your current adventure level for transmuting. You will be very happy once in tiers 8 and 9 to find the nice rewards that are no-trade can now be transmuted to make excellent adornments, not to mention the adornments your characters are going to have as you level one (!) adorner at the same time.

On both my accounts, all the transmuted items go to the one adorner who looks after everyone. Adorning can be an expensive job to level if you haven't all those transmuted goodies to share with the adorner.

I knew I'd think of something else after posting. While using the chronomage you will still get XP and AA for those quests you're doing. Very handy if you're chasing those elusive AA's. While doing the lower levels I usually push the AA slider all the way to 100% and then alter when back in my own level. At 90 in the New Halas quest line I gained 4 or 5 AA's while mentored below 15, through location and quest bonuses.

Actually 1-19 treasured drops will sell for as much or more than the fragments and powders. Your not the only person chasing transmuting skill and the level 90s have a lot of plat to spend on it. Once your beyond these levels, you might continue to farm it for the gold to buy cheaper 20-40 treasured items.

A really good way to search the broker is to use the advanced search feature and limit it to "attunable/treasured" and a seperate search for "spellbook/'adept' in name" Journeyman spells do NOT transmute. Neither will anything that has no-value or ornate tags. I don't think anyone mentioned those. No-trade DOES transmute.

When your looking for fodder, its faster to just kill things than chase quests. The time it takes you to run back to the NPC you could of spent grinding more mobs. Chances are that you could of gotten 1 more chest in that time if not more. Once you catch up to your level, quest/adventure normally. Maybe offer to buy trash drops from fellow adventurers at a fair price.

One other thing, somewhat hinted at, you can level up your transmuting skill by transmuting nothing but Tier 1 stuff (it might take 4 items per skill up). Chronomance down to level 5 or something and then just blast the heck out of undead in Darklight Woods or something.. the mobs there respawned so fast that I could stand in one place and zap them. But I did a mixture of that as well as questing through all the zones that I had missed before and getting those exploration and quest achievements along the way. I'd also skim the broker at times as well.
