There appears to be a targeting issue with Destructive mind. sometimes i can keep a player( in Battle Grounds) targeted and i can cast. but most of the times i have to press F1 and retarget. is this working as planned?

Right-click DM. Set yourself as its target.

All done!

Seriously, why would you cast it on anyone but yourself? Yeah, okay, theoretically you could cast it on another mage in the group and also on yourself before the initial duration expired, but in practice it's kinda hard to do, and once you're in your spell rotation you want it on yourself anyway, so. . . .

Save yourself the trouble. Macro it to target you, only you, and no one but you.

I only cast it on myself.

What i mean is, while im fighting, i have my target. .targeted and i cannot cast Destructive mind on myself.

I have to target myself, then retarget my enemy. in PvE this is fine, but in BG/PvP establishing your target is a lil bit harder. Ppl tend to move around, tanks taunt, ppl deagro. shouldnt Destructive mind default to me if i am targeting a enemy?

You aren't listening.

You need to macro this spell to yourself to avoid issues such as the one you are describing.

Read the spell carefully, paying very close attention to the "target" information. The target of Destructive Mind is *not* an enemy. The target is a friend. This spell is a buff.

So, let's say you target an enemy who is targeting you. In this instance, the spell works as expected. Since the implied target (target of your target) is you, the spell has a valid node to land on.

Next, consider what happens when you target an enemy who is targeting your Brigand. In this case, the spell "seems" to work as intended, but it will never actually deal any damage. Why? In this case, because Destructive Mind actually landed on the Brigand, who has no spells to trigger it with.

Finally, consider the case of an enemy who has his own tank targeted. Here, the spell checks your target. Nope, not valid. It then proceeds to check your implied target. Once again, no good. In this instance, most likely the spell won't cast at all. Both your target and your implied target are enemies, thus not valid targets for Destructive Mind.

Do as was suggested. Macro DM to yourself. It's really the best way to guarantee that the spell is used to it's fullest extent during a fight.

ok, the whole implied target thing thru me off. so, 1 question. when i set the macro up, while im fighting will i have to retarget the enemy after i hit the macro?

Follow these steps:

1. Right click on the icon for Destructive Mind.

2. Select "Create Macro"

3. When the macro window appears, Destructive Mind will be pre-filled as the only ability in the macro. In the Destructive Mind line, there is a box for "target". Type your character name in this box.

4. Click "OK".

Your problem is solved. There will be no targeting changes involved at all. You will target the same way you always have, but DM will only be cast on you.

I have destructive mind on coercer and unholy blessing on sk both macro'd to target myself.

However I notice sometimes, if I'm freshly taunted, I'm unable to cast those spells, even if they are up and available. ymmv

That is because if you're freshly taunted, you're target locked and can not cast any macro'd spell that has a target in it. In this scenario you could actually cast it through the implied target of yourself, assuming the taunter is targeting you. The usefulness of that is low enough though that it's not worth having a second hotkey devoted to it.
