I actually recall watching part of the first episode that aired, but at the time I just didn't get it. Later I heard that they aired in the wrong order and that killed a lot of interest in the show. Bad FOX. Bad.

Fast forward to Dragon*Con 2008...Browncoats everywhere. Jayne hats everywhere. The hook in that episode was the final scene! And starting a story in the middle is usually a bad idea! Bad FOX indeed!

Amnerys wrote:

Now I'm due for catching up on another geeky thing. Martin's "The Song of Ice and Fire" series. The first book is A Game of Thrones.

This is hands down the best currently ongoing Fantasy series IMHO. It reads like historical fiction at first ... knights and swords, noble houses striving against each other, political infighting and machinations at the royal court, etc. But there's a hint (just a hint at first) of magic, and something dark stirring in the background ...

But be warned:

It's a long series with a long way to go. There will be at least 3 more LARGE books in the series, and Martin has been taking longer, and longer, and LONGER between each book (time measured in years, not months). If you don't mind waiting on pins and needles for the next decade like the rest of us poor suckers ... ah, I meant fans ... then I'd still recommend it.

The fourth book and most recent book in the series is no where near as strong as the first three. Up until the 4th, I believe each book was better than the last! But the manuscript for the 4th book had grown so huge that Martin's publisher forced him to split it in half. I think the narrative flow clearly suffered from that split.

The series is more than a little dark.

Jim Butcher's "The Dresden Files". The first book is Stormfront.

Harry Dresden is the only openly practicing Wizard in modern day Chicago. He's in the Yellow Pages under "Wizard". The books are sort of a cross between horror, fantasy, and detective novels. And the mix works quite well! It doesn't have the depth, complexity and scope of Martin's work, but still a fun read. It's more like popcorn to Martin's steak. And like popcorn, you won't be able to stop until it's 'done'. At least I wasn't able to stop until I finished the current book, Changes. Jim's a geek and it kinda shows in his work. Well, so's Martin really (RPGer, Comic fan, etc.), but 'in' geek references really wouldn't work in Martin's fantasy setting they way they work in Butcher's. The Harry Dresden character is sort of a geek too (magic geek, not tech or other 'normal' variety of geek ) who's full of wisecracks and sarcasm, and doesn't know when to keep his mouth shut. It's really fast, fun reading.

This is an ongoing series too, but Butcher has been cranking them out annually on a consistent basis. 10 books so far, with 10 more 'case files' planned, and then an 'apocalyptic trilogy' to cap it all off. So it will be more than a decade before this series is done too.

This series also has some dark aspects.

The SciFi channel turned the books into a short lived TV series. I heard they weren't anywhere near as good as the books. I did start to watch the first episode, but couldn't get past how hopelessly wrong the casting of the characters was.

Bisco County, Jr. is good, its Brue is a Harvard Educated Cowboy, and it plays kinda like James Bone in the turn of the centery old west.

Jack of all Trades is also fairly good, it is Brue as an American Spy on a fictional East Indies Island, working with a Brittish Spy against Nepolian near the turn of the centery(Jefferson sent him). Brue has an alter ego of the "Daring Dragoon" and is similar in charactor to his role on Herculis/Xena.

I would also recomend Wareshouse 13 its basically about the caretacors for the Warehouse at the end of Raiders of the Lost Ark. Where all the artifacts have powers, most fairly dangerous and the agents have to collect them.

Then there is Eurika, wich is about a town of super geniuses, where even the town Mechanic and Cafe' owner have Ph'Ds, and the relitivly normal Sheriff that has to run hurd of them all.

But generally we talk about work most of the way, hehe.

Well if Wil Wheaton is emceeing thier panel, then it shouldn't be THAT long a line

I'm still gradually catching up on those myself.

If you feel inclined toward a more medieval twist, there is Ellis Peter's "Cadfael" series. The books begin with "A Morbid Taste for Bones" and then introduce the second main character in the second book, "One Corpse Too Many." There are 20 books in that series: the author passed on as the 20th book was being published in 1994. Movies were made of several of them, starring Derek Jacobi as Cadfael. Sadly, the films seem to have vanished without a trace beyond a few semi-random you-tube offerings. (Note: The Cadfael series is much more historically than theologically accurate. So if that is likely to offend you, then you may wish to bypass this series. For the most part, the monastary is where Cadfael lives, and the "clock" by which he keeps track of time. Aside from that, it has little impact on the stories.)

Is Sherlock Holmes still in vogue?
Accually prior to the "revived Serries" with Christopher Eccleston, it was off air in Britton for a while. Also it really wasn't a UK Star Trek, because Star Trek was 1hr and Targeted at Adults, Doctor Who was less then 1/2 and targeted at Kids. Hence thier close ties with Blue Peter(a kids verity show). Though they where both low budget I believe. It also older then Star Trek by about 3 years or so...

With Doctor Who it is kinda hard to "chetch up" with 31 seasons and 769 episodes. The nice thing with the Revived Serries is you really don't have to, as they kinda reset it for you each season...besides the set-up is fairly basic. I also think the newest Doctor Matt Smith is even better then David Tennant who followed Chris Eccleston.

Oops, wasn't meaning Dr. Who was identical to Classic Star Trek... but another science-fiction hit TV series produced with a low budget and beginning in roughly the same era. The following for it is similar to the following for Classic Trek with respect to fan loyalty.

I didn't know it had ever been off the air. It certainly lasted longer than three seasons!

And yes... lots and lots and lots of catching up to do. *nods* Since my best friend and all her kids have most of the episodes, I sort of need to catch up so I know what they're talking about.

The cool thing is that the BBC is starting to release the old episodes on DVD again, going all the way back to the first Doctor(and the first show). As for the following, while yes its fans in the US are very similar in nature to Star Trek fans, in Britton(from my persective from the US) they are more similar to the relationship between Bostonians and The Red Sox, they litterally grew-up as fans of the show and it is a major part of the cultural haritage of most of Britton.
