Hi Peep,

I'm struggling with a bit of the damage mechanics in BG and is wandering if you could help out? I will give 2 examples one for a spell damage and one for a mellee and hope you can explain how these work - (as a mage I'm looking in particular at ways different equipment and wards can mitigate against them).

How is the damage for a spell that would do 20k heat (say 10k as base damage and rest being thru crit and crit bonus multiplieer) damage against a naked unwarded person be reduced down?

How is the same damage but from a straighjt melle hit reduced down?

I'm looking at the mitigation acruing from:

Straight Mitigation (say 60% in persona window)

Toughness (say 25%)

Any cap to asingle BG hit?

crit mit reduction from PvE gear (say 75%)

crit reduction from BG gear (partly included in toughness? say 25%)

Heat Resist (say at 75%)

A 2k ward from an item I have

I'm sure this is pretty straight forward to many but I'm getting on a bit in years and my maths not as good as it once were

I'm particularly interested in at what stage a ward kicks in and how that works - at what stage in the calculation does it kick in?

Ta for putting me straight - just want to try to survive a bit longer yet,

Old Man Obam (splitpaw)

I'm getting on myself, so feel totally lost with these new stats and such, but I do know that Crit Mit doesn't not work against other players Toughness is the pvp version of crit mit, so the more of that the better. 100 Toughness will reduce the damage from a lvl 90 opponent by 6.7% and reduce the critical damage by 20%.

And physical mitigation has nothing to do with spell damage, so we can skip it.

That said, if we run the numbers for the toon you mentioned, you will get something like this:

PvP crit mitigation will be at least 48% because you will get 10% from int and toughness translates into PvP crit mit for 1.5 of its value. For simplified calculations lets say the person have 50% pvp crit mit.

If the base damage was 10.000 and you crit for 20.000 that means your crit multiplier is 2.0. So if the PvP crit mit reduces that with 50%, it means that the new crit multiplier is 1.5. So after PvP crit mit the spell will do 15.000 damage.

After the PvP crit mit the heat mitigation comes into the play, which is 75% as you mentioned and it will reduce the spell damage to 3.750.

The toughness comes into the play after all mitigation is calculated, which would be at exact this point. Since you said the person has 25% toughness it means that the spell will do 75% of its value before toughness and that in this case is 2812.

After all the damage reduction was calculated, the ward comes into play and it will ward 2000 of that damage, so the resulting damage from the 20.000 damage spell will be 812.

For more fun, let's run this calculation against a person with capped toughness and maximum obtainable PvP crit mit (115%)

Since the PvP crit mit of this new person is more then your crit multiplier - 1, your spell will not crit on him and do just the 10.000 base damage.

The cap for heat mitigation is 75%, so the spell will do the 25% of the damage after the crit mit again, but in this case that will be 2.500.

Toughness is capped at 40%, so after capped toughness the damage will be 60% of 2.500, which is 1500.

After all this the ward will be counted, and it will completely absorb the spell, leaving 500 absorbtion intact on the ward.

And then we get endless fights.

GONYLIN wrote:

How is the same damage but from a straighjt melle hit reduced down?

Oh, sorry didn't notice this part... Ok let's run it for melee damage.

Case 1, with the gear you specified:

First it will be reduced by 50% crit mit again, reducing it to 15.000.

Then the 60% physical mitigation comes into play which will reduce it to 6.000.

After the physical mitigation the toughness is calculated and it will reduce it to 4500.

Then the ward will eat 2000 of it and the final damage will be 2.500.

Case 2, with capped toughness and stuff (lets say you're a mage)

After the full crit mit reduction it will be 10.000 again

In full PvP gear, with the 4% mitigation adorn and character setup mitigation and the indominable cloak you will have around 70% physical mitigation - which is the maximum you can have solo on a mage. So that will reduce the damage to 3.000.

Then with 40% toughness it goes down to 1.800.

Once again the ward will fully absorb the hit, but this time only 200 more points will remain intact on it.

And once again we have an endless fight.
