I used to play EQ2 about a year ago and I had no problems. Since then I have upgraded to an SSD with Win 7 on it. (Clean install of W7 not upgrade) and I had GX2. Now I have a 295gtx and the game crashes continually - like every 2-3 minutes if I have the settings on anything other than extreme performance. On extreme it will crash anywhere randomly every 30 mins.

I have uninstalled and deleted the display drivers. rebooted added the hardware and reinstalled the drivers with no luck. I play every other game on full with no problems.

Here is the error message I get every time:

Faulting application name: EverQuest2.exe, version:
I had a similar problem when I switched from XP/32 to W7/64. No trouble with XP, regular crashes of the PC (not only the client) when using W7.

In the end it came down to an incompatibility of my RAM with my Gigabyte MB. Updated the BIOS and working fine since then.

I'd try a BIOS update first of all if you haven't got the newest version. And DON'T trust them if they state, that they only added more CPUs and update anyway

Have you checked the memory by any chance? I am not a techie, but I used to see a message like that and found out that it was memory going bad...

Also, sometimes new drivers can cause issues. Have you tried going back to the older version?

I have updated the bios to the latest version 1702 (the mem is fine as it has been super stress tested). Uninstalled (and deleted) the graphics drivers and let windows install what it felt like logged in to EQ2..

Time in Zone: 68 seconds before crash...

well I ran memtest with no errors. I uninstalled the graphics drivers.. again.. ran a driver cleaner and installed certified nvidia drivers (instead of beta ones), I have even moved EQ2 to the ssd to make sure no bad sectors.

And I still crash. Anymore suggestions?

Have you tried downloading and reinstalling DirectX 9.0c runtime from Microsoft? If you don't mind giving that a shot, that would rule out any issues with DirectX since it appears to be crashing within a DirectX dll.

If I run the directx 9.0c install it says it has detected a later version and there is no need to upgrade.
oooh that "may" have solved it. Instead of running the directx updater fromt he website I downloaded it and ran it in admin mode and it did update some files. I have logged in and whacked it on full every thing and it has not crashed instantly (which it would have done before).

So fingers crossed. I will test playing tomorrow night and I will report back. but it is looking good. Thanks for the help so far.

It looks like that crash is occuring when trying to allocate memory. The downside to these types of crashes is that the problem most likely doesn't have anything to do with what was going on at the exact time of the crash. Most likely there's another issue that builds over time (during that 10 minutes) causing the game to crash during a normal operation.

Does this occur when all of your graphics settings turned down and particle effects, flora, shadows, etc. off?

I have tried all different settings. i started by turning everything to minimum and turning each one up to see what makes it crash. Nothing seems to be obvious. When I was in DFC I had to have everything on the lowest settings or it crashed all the time within minutes.

Is the large address aware switch working in EQ2 under 64bit OS?

Seems like an awful lot of people with win7 64bit(me included) are experiencing a crap-ton of crashes and freezes.

P.S. the reason I ask about large address aware is because I can't get EQ2 to use more than 2GB RAM no matter what I do, and it seems that some of the freezing might be memory allocation/page file usage related?

Yeah I have. I have also tried it in every compatibility mode with no joy.

What's a bit weird is sometimes I can go for an hour on full details and then I can't go 2 -3 mins. in the same zone.. doing the same stuff.

Hi, What is the power rating of your PSU, also even if it is enough for your new graphics card I have seen the exact same issue in the past with my old ocz psu and my old geforce 8800gtx, same symptons, had to get a new psu in the end, although ocz do a have a lifetime swap policy, will one day get it swapped lol.

Make/model of your psu too would be a good idea, also if you do have a friend with a spare psu capable of powering your new card, see if they will lend you it for a few hours.

Have you tried manually disabling low memory mode in your eq2.ini file? I'd be interested to see if this makes a difference.

Put this line in your eq2.ini

disable_auto_low_mem_mode true

Also try forcing low memory mode with this line, but don't use them both at the same time.

force_low_mem_mode true

tried both.. Neither worked.

Earlier in CL I was crashing every minute even on extreme performance settings, there was a lot of pvp. The game is unplayable at the moment.

Two suggestions you might want to try:-

First, make sure you have all the updates for DirectX including DX9. Often when people haveDX10 or DX11 that will be up-to-date but you also need DX9 to be fully updated as well.

Second, try disabling your sound card in Windows and playing the game without sound. Sound card issues often cause crashing in EQ2. It's not a solution but for trouble-shooting purposes it may assist.

I hope you can find the cure for your crashing, best of luck.

I helped someone a few months back with their constent crashing. I'm not saying this is the issue you're having but you never know.Thier Issue: Crashing every 10 to 30 minutes randomally. They did not change any hardware in over a year and a half and only started crashing about a month after SF launched.

Their Problem / Solution: Missmatched memory running in "single" mode. Something was changed with the launch (or soon after) of SF in the way memory is/was handled - more then likely for optimization reasions. The solution was to get a matched pair of memory installed and double checked with "CPUID" to make sure it was infact running in "duel" memory mode. She was running Vista - her husband tossed the mismatched memory into his XP box and it ran fine. Vista / W7 is just a lot more picky.

No crashes since.

I also mention this, as someone already mentioned, even if it isnt the above, it could still be a memory issue. Some computers have issues with "small form memory packaging", ect..

Question: What are you're OS log files saying? control panel > admin tools > event viewer > application?

I do not struggle in Aion/CoD Waw/B2 so I am loath to spend £90 on a new psu. As for disabling the sounds card, I will try it but it is the sae onboard sound card that used to work.

All DX drivers up to date. I have also tried deleting as many EQ2 files as I could and re - download them but that has not worked as I have crashed in the guild hall after about 5 mins.

well it got weird tonight. Logged in after updating all the files.. crashed. So opened up the nvidia system monitoring software to see if gpu was getting hot etc and I didn't crash once. 3-4 hours, on max settings and not a single crash. I honestly have changed nothing else!

I got a false dawn before when I updated the DX 9 drivers so I will not count my chickens but it looks promising.
