I'm new to EQ II and never really played Everquest. I leveled up a bunch of classes to 14ish to see which one I wanted and I think I've settled on the Coercer. The problem is that he's got like 6 different tree's he can go down in three different tabs, and there's some Ratonga tab that has stuff too.

I am COMPLETELY lost. Should I concentrate on one tab, or one line in one tab? Or pick 1 line PER tab? Which line should I spec for leveling? Can I respec?

Also, what's a good rotation. I generally charm something, then send it after something. I immediately root, then HO, then I use those abilities and then spam Hemo until it's dead, recharming when I need to.

Thanks in advance.

Signed,

a noob.

1st 5 pts - > Enhance Charm (coercer)

next pt -> Mana flow (enchanter)

next 5 pts - > destructive mind

next 5 pts - > Enhance Medusa's gaze (coercer)

next 5 pts - >Enhance Forces Hesitation (coercer)

Next 6 Pts - > Enhance Hostage (coercer)

Next 6 Pts - > Enhance Spell Curse (coercer)

Next 24pts -> Int line 4 - 8 - 10 - 1 (enchanter)

Next 24pts -> Agi line 4 - 8 - 10 - 1 (enchanter)

This this point it looks like this

This is just how I would do it solo leveling. I am sure others would say take INT sooner, but I think for solo getting your CC up and your main three spells is more important.

Buy the master level spell of charm asap also, you will need it. I agree with the above also, CC is a must at lower levels.

After getting 5/5 charm I went straight down the Agi line and then the Int line, working on getting coercive healing after that. Worked great. Take physical mitigation and the 2.5% hit point bonuses for character traits.

Get your CC abilities (Mez, stun, stifle, root) in a place where you can always hit them asap. The real power of soloing with the coercer comes from good CC. Also make sure you have a clear view of the battle when in a group so you can "save" everyone with a well placed CC.

Master charm is a must. Don't worry about getting the new master everytime you get a new rank. The higher ranks only increase the hit point and power regen of the charmed mob.

Respecing: You can respec. Ask a player or guard where the Acheivment Counselor is. You will be granted a card with 5 free respecs for your Enchanter and coercer tree. Once you have used them up you can still respec for a fee (the fee will increase everytime you do it). There is no free-respec-card for the character or shadows tree, these much be purchased as well.

My Cercer just hit 29 last night. Up until level 27 I had 5 in charm then was going down the AGI line, I did not have the end line though. I was having a slow go soloing the quests in BB and would have issues if I got an add and my charm broke, my DPS was just too low.

I respecced to max out Destructive Mind and Hostage and Charm in the Coercer tree and put the rest in the INT tree to get some crit. I find I kill much much faster now. The added charges to Hostage is amazing, the 3 charges werent enough to kill an even con mob but now it lasts long enough.

This is coming from a new player with no money to upgrade spells or gear besides journeyman and the adepts I find.

I am VERY new to the game.

Also, I got a few dungeon runs with my guild and went from 20-29-ish without really understanding what was going on. Is this hurting me while soloing? I ask because as I charm a mob, or CC one, or deal damage, my skill goes up and it's nowhere near the current cap. 60/130ish or something like that.

I am questing and fighting level 23-ish mobs, and I am dying once every four or five fights due to CC and Charm resist/break. I have 5/5 in Charm.

Thank you for the help.

You need to get a player crafter version of the spell to upgrade (to get a master spell you need to get someone to make you an expert version or buy it off the broker). Once you learn the expert version talk to a research assistant in your home city to begin upgrading it.

Your skills should be kept to Max as much as possible. This will lower the amount of resists you get. They will increase as you use spells (even on training dummies in guildhalls). Subjugation effects your CC spells and Disruption is most of the damage spells the rest isnt too important.

You will die learning. There game has changed a bit since I leveled my coercer. It use to be you would charm a mage mob and rely on it for damage. This is no longer needed since coercers can do some decent damage themself, however it is still handy to charm mobs while solo for the added DPS.

To solo hard mobs ( heroic ^^^ ) you should be more cautious than easier ones. Normally it is best to use a stun rotation keeping root on as a backup and mezzing while waiting for spells to refresh. The key to this is to not use any DOT spells since they will break the mez unless you cancel them before they tick. Taking your time will save you deaths which will save you time in the end. At higher levels this becomes easier since you get more abilities and gear with reuse on it.

Once you get a little higher up you can try using the technique I have been using regularily. I haven't been bothering to charm anything in quite a while, just been solo questing and the rotation I've been using is:

Mezz -> Obliterate Psyche -> Spell Curse -> Destructive Mind -> Asylum -> Hemorage -> Brainshock

Any solo mob white con no arrow or lowere will be dead or be under 2% by then end of this assuming expert level spells, destructive mind AA and maxxed INT line. If they are still solo and are either yellow or have an up arrow I throw in Medusa Gaze after Destructive to make sure they don't come right for me. I only use root and nuke and/or charm when soloing heroics.

It may not be 100% efficient due to having to wait a few seconds for spell curse to refresh periodically, but if I get too impatient I'll just find a blue or green con mob, pull it with Hostage and beat it to death.

Ok, first, I don't ever make a decision to keep a class until it's at least at 35. The real cool stuff for each class doesn't really show up until later.

With a Coercer, well let's just say it can get really frustrating leveling up until you're around 56-58 range, then it is so COOL of a class.

So far you have recieved some great information on how to work you're Coercer.

Another thing you might want to get is a spec mirror. One of your guildmates should be able to make one for you. This will allow you to have a solo spec and a group spec ready to go. For the most part you don't need to worry about Charm and for the most part mezzing at a high level when grouping. Especially if you run around with a Zerker, SK, Warlock, Necro or Conjuror. These class do not for the most part know how to behave around mezzed mobs. For your "Group Spec", concentrate more on DPS, group buffage and a little mezz. For your "Solo Spec" look at stuff that boost your Charm, Mezz and DPS.
