I have my settings on Very High Quality and I cannot see the wood at all. It seems to be totally black with bright white stone. If I turn gamma all the way up I can just barely make out enough detail to find stairs and doors. I am using the standard interface and default settings for Very High Quality. What am I doing wrong?

I'm seeing the same issue in Shader 3.0 (haven't checked it in 1.0 yet). Looks like something funky going on with the shaders; in this one screenshot, at a certain spot part of the room across the way looks normal-ish.

I think I am using the old shader but when I went and played on test I did not have this problem. The wood was much lighter, I will try and take a screenshot this evening and post it

Are you using any additional light sources besides ambient light?

It's definitely not that dark with shader 1.0... maybe I should try out the new shader finally and see how it ends up. I bet that's the problem.

Here's a pic from a similar angle using 1.0:

Mine is even darker though. I am using Shader 3.0. I will try disabling it and see what happens.

Do you have your personal torch activated?

I tried with and without it, there was no discernable difference. Opting out of Shader 3.0 fixed the problem. I will /bug it.

Make sure you post in Imago-Quem's Shader 3.0 2010 post, too. He seems to check that frequently.

I'm using the old shader and its beautiful to me. Not nearly as dark as what you're seeing.

That's not the case, I wasn't useing shader 3.0 and saw that same thing everywhere, not just housing. What finally fixed it for me was a total uninstall/reinstall of the test folder. I am not sure what the problam was, but some graphical setting I had didn't play nice I am guessing. It does seem limited to the areas that have some sort of shadowy texture brushed on.
