Other then apparent size, average muscle mass (Both of which humans can sometimes obtain), and lifespan (one real difference I can see)what are the main differences betwenn Barbarians and Humans?

Trying to figure out a way to differenciate them more from humans in my art.

Humans are slightly smaller in size, more intellegent, more adaptive to surrounding environments and situations, and have a longer natural lifespan than Barbarians. Otherwise, there's not much difference between the two races other than cultures.

But, you can also have larger then normal humans, and possibly shorter then normal barbarians. See how this can be a headache for an artists?

The lore states that the Marr Twins took 24 barbarians and created humans from them. Although it does not specifically say so, my take on that has always been that the Divine Twins 'civilized' the wild northern clans, rather than actually formed a different race altogether. These civilised barbarians were called humans. That's the way I roleplay it at any rate.

I'm refering more to artistic Biology and how to differenciate them. I suppose I could give even female barbarians a strong chin....

Yeah that's the main physical difference between the two. Barbarians show a significant amount of muscle mass. They are naturally wider than humans regardless of size. I'm talking really broad shoulders and waist.

That goes without saying on the muscle mass, BUT a human can gain as much mas if they tried, thereby muddling the waters again.

I think you guys are making too much of a deal out of this. Any human who bulks himself up with THAT much muscle mass would not be able to move. Show me an example in the game where a human is actually taller than a barbarian, and don't use "miniature" models to represent children, because that doesn't count. I'm looking at the character creation screen right now. The tallest human is still 2 inches shorter than the shortest barbarian. The shortest barbarian's shoulders are at least 3 inches wider than the tallest human.

There's also the fact that you will rarely see a barbarian who isn't wearing a Woad on thier face and body. Humans don't deal with body markings.

Color pallet is different, but structually they are very similar.

In a general sense, humans don't have the well built mussle structure that a Barbarian would. By averages, Barbarians stand a good 6-9" taller than (Norrathian) humans. When you go out of the MMO world and into a purely artistic sense the main thing that would seperate barbarians from humans is height, and cultural markings. Barbarians typically have their Woad, and they are missing the kilt and traditional helm they had in EQ1. Still, by looking at the way they dress you should have some idea. That aside, the barbarians should be a bit wider at the shoulders, hips, and legs than you'd make a human of equal height and proportions. As a human, you might be able to reach their level of body mass, but it would fall differently on the bone structure than a race that is made for this.

Oh, and your humans should have a cultural distinctivness also. Generally, their culture is defined by region and not on a racial level.

I find this thread interesting.

I thought about the statement that a human could be equally as muscular as a Barb. True. But... what came to my mind is that a human would not be 'pumping iron' to get that muscle mass. The way they are built would come from what they do in their normal lives.

I would imagine the amount of muscles would be from genetics so even if a Barb and a human did the exact same activities, the Barb would naturally be more muscular. If I were to draw them (and I can't draw a stick figure btw) I would start by imagining how they live, under what conditions, what they would need to do to survive and then think about what type of physical things they would have to do. From there figure out where the most of their muscles would develop. I would think a human blacksmith would look different than a barb who had to chisel out cold rock to build their homes.

Hope you post some drawings

In artist PoV much like in real life there are more variences in the human norm. Not all Barbarians have Woads/Tatoos, especially with the choices in game (and I use Original Models for Barbarians and Dwarves). :p

Aside from the height issue, they only differ in color pallet and wood elves can have tatoos. Structually they are identical.

I remember testing that one time, not even close. High elves are much taller. Not sure why they made all the other elves so short, wish they could allow a little more height just to match the SOGA models.

Edit: Speling

Look.

Barbarians. Very wide chests and incredibly broad shoulders. Usually very muscular. Might have a larger beard.

Humans. Small, narrow. Can be muscular, but not to the point of a barbarian. Typically have trimmed beards if they have one at all.

very simple, think of norse mythology.

there is big differences, bulky race are known as "Aesir", or Asgardians, race of large "warrior folks".

humans are standard size.

they(SOE) could had rename barbarians, halas are more "civilized" and artistic, love many craftings, were taught to be fearless.

to me, barbarian are like conan the hyboreania, nearly untamed race, nomadic, only craftmanship is weapons.

barbarian are more like pagan-shamanic tribal and wanderers and Halasian are not wanderers or nomads, they built city and had coinages, and arts they can trade with other societies.

some players get confused, most they know barbarians were dressed in bearskins or rough-sewn leathers and go in battle semi-naked, but wearing plates would make them no longer barbarians.

they should be renamed somewhat as Aesir, or offsprings of "Scions of Asgardians", maybe consider as Einherjar, since they used armors, arts, and quality of craftmanships, and able to create many poems and epic saga.

barbarians dont write on books, they used rocks.
