I am fairly new to BGs (love them so far) and I have a few questions about how taunts work. As I understand, if a tank taunts me successfully I will be forced to switch targets to them.

So my questions are:

1. If I have no one targetted and I am taunted will I auto target them and engage in combat (i.e. slower movement, etc.)?

2. Does damage produce PVP aggro like it does in PVE? So if someone is hitting me for damage, no taunting, can I be forced to switch targets?

3. Probably the same question as #2. As a ranger, can I grab aggro and force someone to target me even when I don't want them to? In other words, do I need de-aggro gear/AAs in BGs?

4. If I have been taunted can I break the taunt/target lock by moving away from the tank? Or do I just have to wait it out?

Thanks for the help.

All the info I give you is based off what I have experienced im combat in PVP, i have no hard evidence on it though.

1. If I have no one targetted and I am taunted will I auto target them and engage in combat (i.e. slower movement, etc.)?

If you are taunted when you have no one targetted you will be forced to target them.. But your not in not technicially engaged with them, your movement speed wont be slowed much, I know in battlefield of ganak 99% of the time when I taunt someone, they still run like 100% speed with the flag. it sucks i know.

2. Does damage produce PVP aggro like it does in PVE? So if someone is hitting me for damage, no taunting, can I be forced to switch targets?

well normal taunts seem unaffective while in groups with high parsing DPS, it seems like PVP and PVE work the same way. in order for your taunt to get you agro, it must produce more hate than another persons damage. So for instance if someone nukes your enemy for 100 damage, you have to produce 101 hate to get agro. (unless using +1 hate position taunts)

3. Probably the same question as #2. As a ranger, can I grab aggro and force someone to target me even when I don't want them to? In other words, do I need de-aggro gear/AAs in BGs?

deagro works very well. all scouts/mages have a spell that drops thier hate position by 1 spot, you can use it a lot, and using it will cause your enemy to drop targets from you

4. If I have been taunted can I break the taunt/target lock by moving away from the tank? Or do I just have to wait it out?

Well this is what pisses me off as a paladin, see all taunts/agro just switch your targets. Big Whoop. Who cares, all you gotta do is Press tab, and you can switch back to the previous target who you want to fight. taunts do almost nothing to a skilled player who wants to target whatever he wants to target. However zerkers(and maybe other classes) get a spell that can LOCK your target so you cant switch to anythign else. only thing you can do is wait it out. distance has no effect it seems. I wish all tanks got target locks for PVP, as it is normal taunts seem very uneffective.

However rescue/sneering assault/holy ground seem like the only ones which do anything

Firstly, ignore Mr.Pessimistic Paladin above, he hasn't got a clue.

Jonaroth wrote:

1. If I have no one targetted and I am taunted will I auto target them and engage in combat (i.e. slower movement, etc.)?

It *CAN* happen. I don't know why, and I can't replicate it, but I have had my auto-attack turned on by a taunt. It is very rare though. So rare that I can only remember it happening two or three times in what... three years?

2. Does damage produce PVP aggro like it does in PVE? So if someone is hitting me for damage, no taunting, can I be forced to switch targets?

Damage has no effect at all on PvP agro. The only abilities which will drop target or taunt are the ones which specifically state that they will force a target change or force your target to clear their target. Some abilities which say they reduce/increase threat in pve content dont do anything in PvP.

3. Probably the same question as #2. As a ranger, can I grab aggro and force someone to target me even when I don't want them to? In other words, do I need de-aggro gear/AAs in BGs?

Most deagro gear does not drop target in PvP combat. Same deal with threat-increase procs. No taunts from them either. As a ranger, Im pretty sure you don't have anything that can taunt... and if you do, pretend that button doesn't exist.

4. If I have been taunted can I break the taunt/target lock by moving away from the tank? Or do I just have to wait it out?
You have to wait. Alot of tanks have additional taunts that will trigger if you hit them, so the best way to break a target lock is to back off and stop attacking. Having said that, there are times when you just CAN'T get off the tank and the best choice is to just burn him down. As long as you aren't grouped with a pack of idiots, you can kill tanks fairly easily.

My comments in RED

Jonaroth wrote:

If you are taunted when you have no one targetted you will be forced to target them.. Taunts shouldn't put you into combat.

well normal taunts seem unaffective while in groups with high parsing DPS, it seems like PVP and PVE work the same way(no). in order for your taunt to get you agro, it must produce more hate than another persons damage(no). Bewilderment/Evasive Manuevers are the spells that I think you are talking about. In this case, those spells are just damage in pvp. They do nothing to hate. Evade (scout deagro) DOES force a target drop and SOME mages have spells which can drop your target. Best bet is to check that little pvp box and read what the spell does.

Well this is what pisses me off as a paladin, see all taunts/agro just switch your targets(no). I can't get a PvP check-box on the end-line AA ability, because I don't actually have it on my paladin, but the spells i did have... well look for yourself.

Figured I'd add these as well.

Items which proc threat/de-threat do not also proc taunts.

Some skills which have an effect on threat will count as taunts/target dropping abilities... but some will not.

Thanks so much for help.

Silly me, I didn't think to re-read all of my spells and procs while in PVP to look for wording changes. I will definitely do that next time I'm in BG.

The pvp answer is as simple as right clicking all your spells and examining them. You will see a check box that says pvp. Click it to see what your dehates do in bg's. There is no force target aggression in bg's unlike pvp were a zerk can hold agro with just dps. Taunts are the only way to obtain and hold agro. All taunts act different when you are in bg's vs. pve situations. Your ranger dehate forces the target to loose you as a target. Not sure the duration but is very effective on mages that can and will one shot you. Well I take that back. Might one shot you now that resists are fixed. Yay.

As far as them being able to just tab target you have and can keep doing your job by tauntlocking like crazy. Nothing upsets the opposing dps more than getting one of us down to 20 % just to be taunted off. By the time they find the one they had at 20% a good healer has refilled thier health. Taunts are an annoyance to the opposition. Dont think just because your taunts dont hold them on you that they are junk. They can make and break the bg's competition.

Hope this helps.

Edited to say sorry for the double coverage Val. Good posting.
