View Full Version : My wife says BG's are making me snappy...

Apparently I'm using a lot more "colorful" language while I play BG. I use it often and loudly. She says I'm more snappy and impatient. I'm fairly certain she's right. Strange thing is I'm having fun but with the fun comes frustration and anger. The anger is usually at myself for making a mistake. The frustration comes from getting nuked to death by people I cannot even see. Or getting into another hopelessly unbalanced Gears match. Either way. Once I spend the tokens I have, it may be time to take a break. On the drive to work today I was still mad about the poor excuse for a group sony's matchmaker setup, 3 times in a row this morning before I left for work. The last time I remember getting emotionally impacted by EQ like this was EQ1. Nothing more frustrating than sitting outside Fear with multiple corpses inside after several failed breaks with a pickup raid. Had to wait for my own guild to gather with friends to come break it for us. I loved EQ1 but I must have quit it 5 times over a 4 year period. In 5 years of EQ2 I have not taken more than a couple weeks of breaks and those were for RL reasons. Atleast the BG I can walk away anytime and play the normal game. Really I can. Seriously I could quit anytime I want. Maybe even next week. Or the week after. Anytime now. Just not right now.

I do agree that switching from a blue server style to a "grind the BGs" style really did affect my sense of calm. You have to be completely alert and on your A game to do the BGs (assuming that you don't want to be dead weight). Yet for PvE work, I don't have to pay that kind of attention and focus. Fighting scripted mobs and over land content gets to the point of being shake 'n bake easy. There's very little thought to it. But having an AI opponent which is coming from unpredictable angles, times, and attack styles is very challenging. It can be rewarding, but it's a real mental switch for us PvE people.

When I was grinding tokens for my BG jewelry and off-hander, I found that I needed to take a break away from EQ2 at one point. If I was playing in the game, then I'd slip into a BG even when I told myself not to. Instead I found it easier to just walk away from the computer for a few days to unwind. Since it sounds like you're getting the same way, I'd suggest that you think about taking a break for a day or two.

Also make specific goals. I'll grind the BGs for enough tokens to get x(?) pieces of specific gear, then I'm going to take a break from the BGs to do some PvE work. Setting a silly goal like permanently grinding the BGs for a full set of armor, jewelry, or all of the above will just burn you out on the BGs (reducing your enjoyment of them) and can affect your personal mood. This is especially easy to get caught up in when you're looking to gear out multiple characters on your account. You've got 2+ years until T10 game play, so try to take things in a bit of moderation.

Thanks Eric. That was a very thoughtful and helpful post. Setting small goals sounds very practical and useful. My current goal is 3 pieces of armor for my ranger. Once that's done I think I'll quit BG for awhile. Focus on building his AA before starting again. Quitting the game for 2 days is beyond me right now. Maybe next week....

When I first started on Venekor (Nagafen was too full so they opened a 2nd PvP server) the adrenaline rush from getting attacked by an orange con level 17 assassin in Antonica left me jittery. The constant threat of attack and potential loss of item/fame (didn't understand that mechanic then, all I knew was you lost it when you died to someone 1 rank higher or lower than you) were enough to make my nerves frayed. It was exciting and frustrating all at the same time.

In BGs there is very little to lose. Two less tokens is not a big deal if you ask me. I use my Swashbuckler and banzai into full groups with my AOE knockback all the time, if I die, so be it. I can be very disruptive at least. If someone picks me off without me seeing them. Kudos, you got me.

PvE makes me drowsy for the most part. And those shard quests/instances are really, really annoying. All that time invested for 3 measely shards/marks?! No thanks.

Roll up a toon on Nagafen, get to 10 and go to DLW. Die repeatedly to the gankers out there, and you will be cured of your problem. You will form a nice hard callous around that pride. Once cured, delete toon and go about your business.

PvP is such a huge part of my game in eq2 since my brother begged me to roll a toon on Naggy a few years back because we never got to hang out. He was a teenage hormone driven pot head that liked to smash face so I was thinking I was going to the kid zone but meh hes mah bro so I did it. I quickly found that he lost interest and I loved it. Everything I do in this game has been to upgrade so I can pvp better. PvP isn't mindless face smashing its 80% planning 20% fighting, it requires much more thought, proper use of potions and siggys, everything adorned properly, and exactly the right debuff and CA rotation. Its defiantly not kid zone. Its a chess match when its done right and Its an addiction no doubt
