View Full Version : Battlegrounds and DB Performance

Through this weekend we're going to throttle the speed in which players return from a battlegrounds match in effort to lessen the impact on home worlds. This might result in a little longer time for your character to be moved home after the match is over, but we feel this will be the best way to keep battlegrounds going at full capacity without having as much impact on the home databases.

We are continuing to work on other permanent solutions to improve performance and will have more information on those in the future.

Good. Let them zone slow instead of people actually playing EQ2.

Thank you Rothgar. I appreciate the information.

How much slower is slower though? It can already take a considerable amount of time to get back into RE after a match, is it going to get worse?

It shouldn't even be integrated as much as it is with the gear, the gear should have almost 0 effect in PvE.

And PvE gear should have almost 0 effect in PvP.

But I guess that concept is terrible.

There is the database performance which causes the slow zoning, slow broker transactions, etc. Then there is the general lag issues some people are experiencing during combat where things can seem to stop for a period of time. That comment from Kiara is about the general server problems while the one from Rothgar is about the database performance. Two separate issues which according to the devs have different causes.

Kiara's post was in reference to a thread about server lag which had nothing to do with battlegrounds. My post was regarding DB issues which manifest themselves as slow zoning, broker delays, etc. I know it can be confusing sometimes to tell the problems apart.

Did you guys noticed any slower return times Friday night? This throttling was on all evening but hopefully you won't have noticed a big difference.

It actually wasn't as bad as I thought, maybe 30-40 seconds at max was the worst I had it hang at the end of a match.

It wasn't until I read this thread that I knew about it.

Zoning out of BGs was quite a lengthy process, but to be honest it wasn't as bad as it has been over the last couple of weeks. It certainly wasn't much worse.

I dont do BG's, Fri evening on Naggy I still notice a good bit of broker lag and longer than normal zone times not as bad as it has been, Sat morning zoning times seemed normal but broker lag was horrible.

This may not be related but I have noticed a good deal of trouble as of late trying to get in game while in TD, especially if my character is around the Mok Rent area. The game flat hangs up on updating environmental data and I have tried disabling shadows, switching to windowed mode and various other setting. Sometimes if I sign on a different character I can camp to the one that bugs out and it lets me in, other times I cant and have to play a different toon for awhile. There is no crash report generated because I have to use the task manager to end EQ2 process to unlock it. I watched cpu usage during the lockup and as soon as it starts checking environmental data the cpu usage goes to basically nothing.

The reason I am bringing it up here is because during the times I have trouble getting into game are also the same times I have longer than normal zone times and I have the broker lag problems as well. I dont know if its related or not, the problems seem to come and go with no set pattern I can duplicate on my end but my ping is good and it stays usually around 200-300.

zone times and broker lag is terribad right now on Nagafen.

Talking pre-DB upgrade zone times I'm going through right now, can't imagine what they will jump up to when raids start.

To the SOE People. why can't you guys just create a lobby on the BG server that everyone zones to. Someone posted this idea before.

Just make it so that when you go into BG's you go to a lobby on the BG"s server first(the lobby would be PVE area.) Once there the players can select which type of battle they want. Once they are done with thier battle they would return to the lobby and would only return to thier server when they wanted to. You could have an NPC to return them to thier server.

That way people who are running several consecutive BGs can actually stay logged into the BG server the whole time. The BG hub concept works well to make this possible.

I actually really like the idea of staying logged into the BG hub servers. It'd be awesome if there was an actual BG hub zone where people could form groups and chat or smacktalk between matches.

Not going to or from BGs, but zoning on Mistmoore is extremely slow tonight (03/29/2010 @ 7:45pm ET). About 5 minute to zone into Lair of the Dragon Queen on a low population server.

At 9:00pm ET the zone time into Perah'Celsis' Abominable Laboratory has been 20 minutes so far and the guild is still waiting.

Well I know I have about had it with this "lag" due to database management even if it's not server lag. I presently have 3 accounts, had them for years now, but I think pretty soon I am going to shut down at least two of them, and maybe the third, and find a game where things don't come to a dead stop trying to zone in for a raid. Waiting 20 minutes to zone, waiting 10 minutes to buy something on the broker... I mean REALLY, we are paying money to PLAY, not sit around and wait and get irritated, just because SOE can't manage some new aspect of the game.

If you can't fix the problem in a timely manner (and it's sure been a while now), then put BG on hold until you CAN make it work seamlessly, this is just BS. It's pretty stupid marketing to alienate the people that want to PLAY, because you want to run some new sub-game.

Anyway, as soon as I'm done with this rant, I'm going to go disable two of my accounts, and then we will see about the last one. Pretty bad when "tech support" tells you that nothing can be done because it's not their domain, and the devs don't seem concerned about losing customers. Oh well

RE: the DB issue, I suspected BG zoning was causing Broker lag, thanks for the confirm..

FWIW, broker lag, at times, can still be REALLLLLY painful.. like 60+ seconds per item-into-sales-display kinda painful..
