So here is the situation. I recently reopened by account and bought all the expansions. My old account had level 30-40 characters on it from way back in the beginning which I really like and want to keep playing. After looking around I see there is a new AA system which provides benefits to your class. I think I left the game after the first adventure pack before thsi system came into play, so all my characters have ZERO AA points. I also see a number of recommendations to start building AA points up early.

So my questions are:

1.) How weakened are my guys for not having any AAs?

2.) What is the best way to go about fixing this so my characters have the appropriate amount of AAs for a level 30-40 character?

3.) What is a good ballpark number of AAs I should try to get for my characters around this level?

My advice:

Go to 100% XP to AA (i.e. freeze your level and pile on a bunch of AAs). Go to teh AA pane and set the slider full over; its not like the old 'lock my level' setting you might remember from before.

There is a massive ammount of quest content available in that range. How many AA to aim for exactly? - depends on the class. Look at the class forums and look to see if there are any 'must have' end line abilities, and lock until you have them. (e.g. Necro tainted heals) Maybe go to level 32 or 42 so you can get nice MC gear and use that for your AA gathering escapades.

What classes do you have and what do you think you'll be doing? Some classes have changed quite a bit over the last couple of years, its possible you might not like some of your toons anymore. Also the availability of pick up groups in the lever tiers is much reduced. Consequently you might consider rerolling some of your toons; its pretty quick to level to 32.

Welcome back and good luck!

Something else you may not be aware of, being away for a while, is that they added self-mentoring to the game. There are chronomage npcs in each main city (Qeynos Harbour near the dock and EFP on the dock behind the inn are the ones I know offhand) that will allow you to choose to "mentor" down to a lower level (in increments of 5, so say level 15, 20, or 25) for a small fee. If I recall correctly, it is something like 100 (1000?) status points plus 6 gold, and you will stay that level until you choose to manually unmentor. Its a great way to be able to go back and visit lower level content that you missed for AA when you don't have someone available to mentor directly. As was already said, there's a ton of content in that 30-40 range, but there is also the recently revamped Butcherblock and Kaladim areas that may be partially greyed out already, so dropping yourself to level 25 or 30 and then locking AA at 100% could work very well for you. The nice thing about AA is that each point will cost the same to earn regardless of your adventuring or crafting level, and the amount scales as you earn more, so the first batch of AAs should come quite quickly.

In terms of characters I have a ton to choose from. And I have yet to play them long enough to notice any changes. Just got back in yesterday and spent most of the day sorting out my items and setting upmy UI again. But for reference here is what I have:

28 Dirge

28 berserker

28 monk

30 Defiler

38 necromancer

30 Assassin

31 Paladin

26 Warlock

41 Coercer

As said there are many tools now to get your characters some AA built up. It is rather easy now. Consider that when AAs came out not everyone had their characters at cap.

There are many ways to gain AA now. I was level 58 when AA was introduced and now i am 90/218. There are a lot of zones with quests and disco now. Everfrost, Lavastorm; Nek forest got revamped with solo quest lines. New zones in Faydwer from 0-70 have been added. Also, once you are on a higher level with good armour (for example 80 with shard gear) you can solo all heroic content from 0 to 60 by using the cronomancer. Many epic nameds have been turned into heroics and you can solo them. Quite a few epic questlines can be soloed/duoed now. There are also zillions of new collections that have not been ingame back then.

Btw. back then when AA was introduced they have reset all disco. Its worth to visit all places in Thindering Steppes, Common Lands and so on. Its also adds to your Achievments

However, i suiggest to concentrate on only one or two alts, because AA gaming can be very time consuming.
