Read up here on the individual gods and their blessings and miracles.

Once you think you know of one that is your characters alignment or neutral (neutral can be both good or evil characters) then you want to find the prophet of that god.

Ex. Prophet of Ro

Then just talk to them and do their quests. Doing their quests opens up more miracles and blessings you can get from your altar. :)

Eq2.eqwikia has a much more in depth and well written description, but that is the basics there.

Also through the deity quest chain, you'll get a small stat buff that has a physical representation of a pet. Some people pick gods according to the stat that the pets buff. But considering how inconsequential the stat amount is at end game, most people pick gods based on what their miracles can do.

For example, my Brigand worships Anashti Sul for the noticeable jumps in dps when I'm using my god powers to tip a fight. She has become the god of choice for most of the evil dps classes. Yet on the other hand, I'm not completely impressed with the only neutral healer god (Karana) for my Inquisitor. So as a result, I've intentionally picked the sub-standard choice of Bristlebane for humor and the various utility effects that those miracles can give me in a pinch.
