Problem 1

Randomly out of nowhere my computer shuts off and my monitor goes black! My computer has never done this before and it is very beefy.

I built my computer: Windows Vista 64 Bit - 4 GB of Ram - Geforce 9800 GT BFG OC It's running the game just fine no lag or anything. Just out of nowhere my computer crashes. It has never happend before and it doesn't happen out of this game. I have tested it. It has crashed 4 times on me while playing and not very long of play time inbetween crashes.

Problem 2

My keymap settings keep changing on me and a red message keeps coming up saying windowed hud or some bs for just about everything I press on the keyboard. Every time I tab out my entire keymap gets changed and messed up.

As long as my computer crashes the game is unplayable. Please help!

if the machine is physically powering off would suspect a PSU or a overheat issue more then a software problem. First step would be to open the side and use a can of compressed air to get rid of any killer dust bunnies that are living in the machine, then verify that all fans are spinning properly.

I agree with the overheat suggestion. While you are in there, you can also remove the memory chips while you are air dusting. If those get dust on the connectors, they have an intermittent connection. Remove, dust, and reseat.

I am not very experienced with troubleshooting hardware, but I do know that overclocking can cause instability issues like this, since it overtaxes the device and can trigger safety measures like powering off the whole device to avoid overheating.

Yeah overclocking can. But I didn't overclock it! It came factory overclocked. Also my powersupply is brand new no problems with it yet. I'll look inside the comp after my download then I'll post back

Although factory overclocking implies that the card can handle the resulting clock speed, this does not take the rest of your system hardware into consideration. For example, the card may draw significantly more power, or at a faster rate than is normal, and it's up to you to make sure that your PSU is rated for the full power requirements.

Another such issue that can crop up involves the excess heat from the card starting to overheat other components due to proximity. If this is the case, it may be sufficient to relocate the card to a more distant slot, or space adjacent components so that there is sufficient airflow between them.

Unless someone else provides a better course of actions, I'd suggest first checking your PSU specs with the requirements provided by BFG, and if they are sufficient, temporarily disabling the overclocking to see if the problem is alleviated. If not, then at least you've eliminated one potential cause.

I am very sure my video card isnt the problem. I run much higher graphic games then Everquest on a daily basis. These games include Modern Warfare 2, Mass Effect 2. I have never had any problems with these games playing 10+ hours a day. I am a tech guy myself. I have a 1300 page Operating system and Hardware book right in front of me that I have read cover to cover. I know first hand video cards do not shut the computer down they leave lines across the screen. Computer CPU temperature shuts the computer off. By the way my computer has not shut down since I last opened Everquest2. My computer also doesn't go above 35 degrees. Therefore it's under half the required cpu shutoff temperature for the computer to "auto-shutoff".

If it isn't related to the graphics card then it sounds like some form of power supply failure. If the power supply isn't failing outright then it could be a power cable that isn't connected securely. You may want to try unplugging and reconnecting the various power cables that lead to your system components to ensure that they are making full contact.

I checked fans, connections. All fans working fine replugged the power supply connections. I'll try playing the game for awhile.

Seems to be working fine. I suspect two things - the 24-pin power connecter might of come out a bit due to being 2 different plugs (it's actually a 20-pin + a 4-pin attached together and not really connected together just supported by the plugin) or my usb harddrive was powering down to save power while I was downloading to it (it freezes my comp for about 10 seconds when it powers back up. Well it seems to be working fine now. Been playing my iksar monk for about an hour (level7) without any problems. Thanks for the help techies.

Glad to hear!

As for the external hard drive powering down, I can definitely relate; even my secondary (internal) HD has a rather irritating spin-up habit. I usually try to keep games and other time-sensitive software on the same drive as the page file so that there's no chance of an inconveniently-timed spin-down, but having to play Klotski with the filesystem when you're low on drive space can be even more of a headache!

I'm happy to hear you were able to get it working. I had a similar problem after upgrading my computer a while back where one of the motherboard power connectors didn't have a solid connection. Let us know if you have any further questions.
