Spire portals: lore or mechanics?

<p>So the teleporting wizards and warlocks is now a portal due to the whole ultera thing. Since the fact the portal sends you to non-ultera spires I had to ask, is the portal mearly from mechanics to keep up with druids (since it seems we've done away with gather our scrolls at the expense of paying 20 gold) or is there a lore reason that it reaches combine spires? </p>

But iirc the Erudites tried to reactivate the Combine ones to work with the Ultera ones, hence the reason they connect with each other... i'll have to double check where i read that..</p>
