Hello all,

I was playing everquest 2 on my G51J laptop (4 ddr3 ram , gtx 260M) and the game stop and i was in front of a blue screen that lasted 2 seconds(so i couldnt see anything). Now my laptop is making a faint grinding noise and the startup is incredibly slow. Any advice on what to do ?

Hm. Is it overheating? That's the first thing I think with laptops. A grinding is something mechanical - hard drive or fan perhaps.

Does your system meet the hardware requirements? Try this site to check.

Shut it down, let it cool, and try again. If it doesn't improve, and even if it does, think about getting a new HD, and hope you have good backups. 'Grinding' is never good.

Also, try posting this in the technical help forum.

It was not overheating and im way above the requirements, i did a full file check and everything is ok, but that small grinding noise is kind of scary...

lol just because the files are all still there doesnt mean that the grinding isnt the hard drive, now im not saying it is the hard drive ether but it is one of the more likely cantidates in this situation. See if you can isolate what exactly is grinding and make sure you have backups of everything just in case...

Grinding is scary with anything but skateboarding....wait...even skateboarding...

I would suggest checking your video card temp. and your CPU temperature using speedfan or another program if possible.

I look at computers like cars...just because it is a brand new car or a giant monster truck does not mean it won't have issues come up.

You never want to hear a grinding noise, and with one around, you want to check and double check your system, back up your files, and mentally prepare for the worst (I am a negative nelly).

It may be something minor though.

When my desktop PC was grinding, I opened it and cleaned it completely. I took a vacuum hose and cleaned it out very well.

I removed and cleaned the fans with Q-tips and the crevices that the vacuum would not reach.

It grinded for all of 2 mins. after that and hasn't since.

ok but while playing, is there something known to help reduce BSOD in everquest 2 like graphics option and such?

sounds like your laptop is beginning to fail.

Since you think you hear a "grinding" sound you can try checking your hardrive. try spinrite at grc.com

if that's fine. might try memory test. if you have win7 , there is a memory test program...I forget the name...google it.

also check heat. try everest.

goodluck

ps. lower your graphics wont help. any use of your discrete gpu will increase heat, memory will still be used and your hardrive will still get worked over...so check your hardware. it's not eq2. any program will BSOD you OS if the supporting hardware goes out.

BSOD is usually a memory problem. Run some stress tests and see if they fail. Like Memtest or prime.

That will point at the failing module. If the systen auto restarts, go into Computer (My Computer if XP), then right click, select properties, then the Advanced section, Look for system restart box, click on settings and remove the check mark form auto-restart. The next time the system crashs copy down the stop text. As mentioned, memory can cause tis issue, but a corrupt driver can also be the culprit.
