I am having the same issue with several alts. When I attempt to log into TD, it hangs on "Updating environment map". I've tried deleting the login cache, doing a full scan, and none of these help.

Is anyone else having this issue besides us? It is quite frustrating.

While your on your character select screen open options and turn shadows off, you should be able to log in to TD then.

Problem has been going on for about a month now and this is the only workaround I have found for it.

Greetings,

Sorry for the slow response. We've been a little busier than normal and I haven't had much chance to post this week.

Regarding the problem loading Timorous Deep, I don't see a mention of what happens when it fails to load. Does it crash back to desktop or back to character select? Does it give you any kind of error message when it fails to load? Generally speaking, a crash to character select on specific zones indicates a router issue. If it is crashing to desktop, though, please try lowering your graphics settings temporarily before logging in again.

What it does is lock up the game completely at the point it starts loading environmental maps, there is no other way to do anything with the game at that point except open task manager in windows and force shutdown of the game client.

So far it ONLY happens in TD and only when running shadows.

bryantis

Ok i have set it so no shadows are on and i still get issuses it hangs on loading environmental maps and as brook said the only way is force shut down via tasl manager sorry bout lack of info. But the probelm is very frustarting and still does it with all shadows of any other ideas on what to do?

It's still happening to me-- even with Shadows disabled.

I looked at my alterlog.txt, and saw this error:

build="SOEBuild=6184L" version="SOEVersionString=2010/1/27 10:12:24" build_type="USER OPTIMIZED" ls_address="none" zone="exp04_rgn_timorous_deep" loc="1805.23 113.63 -395.55" performance="1" alert="E:liveeq2frameworkresmansrcResourceManager.cpp(200 4): Error loading _exp04/composed/zones/regions/timorous_deep/goro_obj_gear.voc"

So it seems to be having trouble loading resources. I attempted deleting the vpk containing that resource file, but I'm not sure which one it is, so I deleted all TD/Gorowyn-related VPK's. The launcher re-downloaded them but I still have the same issue.

Seeing how many of us came here to report this, I'm thinking this is a bug, and not an issue with the resource files themselves. Specifically, because there are certain characters that can log into TD just fine. And I did nuke my UI directory, my login cache, etc. To no avail. So now I'm completely re-installing. I'm glad I have FiOS...

Again, the issue presents itself this way-- log into a character in TD, the loading freezes ad "Updating environment map..." and the game must be killed with the task manager. There is no error message in the UI.

Let's try completely removing the Timorous Deep game files so that they can be redownloaded by the game. There may have been some kind of change to the zone the is causing a file inconsistency. The file names should be the following:

exp_rgn_timorous_deep.vpk

exp_rgn_timorous_deep_SG.vpk

By default those files should be located in the following directory:

C:Program FilesSony Online EntertainmentInstalled GamesEverQuest IIpaks

Please let me know if that has any effect on the issue.

If you have characters stuck in a zone then please send a /petition to the GMs so that they can get the character moved for you.

Meanwhile, you may want to make backups and then delete the following files and folders:cache foldereq2_recent.inieq2_default.iniEverQuest2.exee q2.iniAs well as the character specific files, these will appear as such:Servername_CharacterName_EQ2_uisettings.iniSt ationname_characters.ini

If that doesn't correct the problem then you can move the files back to their original locations to restore your old settings.

This is just now happening to me as well. I deleted those files the mod said, and was able to log back in. I fixed my resolution, my UI, all that stuff, and relogged because my screen looked bad and stretched. When game came back up, I tried to log back in, and again, the zone freezes on "Updating Environment Map," once again.

So this happened immediately after deleting, and having it fixed for a single login. However, when I try again, deleting the files, and after fixing my UI and resolution size, the screen looks ugly and stretched, so I am in the same vicious circle. I can't relog or else the zone bugs on me again. So I have to play with a nasty resolution stretch. I really would like to not have to change the UI and such each time I try and play my character. It's a shame, as Timorous Deep is a wonderful newbie zone, but looks like I might be moving shop.

-Deloessian

**Edit: I CAN log in with my Wizard, in the same zone (TD) but not my Inquisitor unless I jump through the hoops. Such an odd bug.

I realize this is a busy time and all, and stuff like this will probably take a back seat to expansion issues for now, but as someone outside of the countries deemed worthy to buy Sentinel's Fate at retail (this is a whole other issue), I'd still actually like to play my character in TD.

After patching today, the problem persists.

An actual fix would be superduper.

/holdbreath

EDIT: An interesting sidenote here is that while the game remains completely frozen at Updating environment map, it seems to keep gobbling up system memory anyway (shown in task manager). I smell a leak.

I dont know if this will be of any use to anyone working on fixing this issue but hey, you never know.

So... As pointed out in threads above, I have had this issue. The fixes would work, then break again and I would have to go through it all again.

Anyways - I have recently bought and Installed Sentinals Fate (Digital Download edition), patched it up - And so far (Touch wood as we say here in the UK) this issue has not reoccured. All my characters in TD are able to log back in again and after 4 days this has not happened again.

I dont know if something in the Expansion/Patching has overwritten the thing that was causing the problem, or if its just a fluke or what, but would be interested to see if anyone else with SF is still having the issue or if its cleared up for them also.

This has been happening to my wife for a few months now however, after installing SF, she has not had the problem. Unfortunately I now do, even though I was "immune" all this time. It started happening after the patch.

There is obviously something wrong with the zone since it does not happen anywhere else, so far.

This has happened to me as well. If I go into the options on the character select screen and set the display to high performance, I can log in. If I set it back to high quality I won't be able to log in, I can play but I will need to set it to High performance again when i need to log in unless I delete the files, But doing so is only a temporary fix. Only in td, of course. Hope this helps.

I was having this problem but seemed to have fixed it for now. I was under the impression this was a problem with the custom UI i was using. So I'm wondering is anyone having this problem that is using the games UI and not a custom one?

I use windows XP so don't think it's a windows professional problem.

How i fixed it was i removed the custom UI folder i was using (ProfitUI). I could then log into the game and it quit freezing. I then tried a different UI (DrumUI) and it froze again. So i deleted that UI , the entire contents of the Cache folder, and everything in the EQ2 folder except the folders and the Eq2 icons. I then ran the patcher to get all the files back and ran a full scan after. Then i put DrumUI back in and logged into the game. I haven't had a freeze up since. The downfall of this was it deleted all my configuration settings but it was worth it for now. All my characters are still under level 20 and use this zone, so i have logged or zoned into Timorous a lot since doing this and no freezes so far. (crosses fingers)

I do wish i would have taken the time to delete one file at a time so i could tell you exactly which one was corrupted but i was frustrated at the time because i couldn't log in at all. I did try just deleting the Timorous files in the cache folder and this didn't help. I also tried deleting the UI settings file for the character i was trying to log in. This would allow me to log him in but once that new UI file was created i would freeze again if i relogged.

hope some of this helps.

Just checking in here again. Haven't had the problem for a while, as I got the character it was happening to out of TD. Now I have a different character there, and it's doing it...again. Deleting the files doesn't seem to work (tried that twice). Using the default UI (via renaming my EQ2.ini) allowed me to log in. Haven't tried relogging yet, but playing with the default UI is really......significantly less good.

A fix would still be lovely. Not a workaround: a fix. Just sayin'.

Very annoying.

The same exact thing happened to me on 2 separate accounts on 2 separate PCs at the same time. Everything up that point had been OK. No problems at all. Then today at approximately 5:15 PM, without any updating from SOE or changes to either PC the problem occurred. On one PC, I set the compatibility to be Windows XP (running Windows 7 on both machines). It worked! On the other PC no luck. On the machine which compatiblity mode didn't work, I did a full scan and it let me in... Now my plan is to simply "level out" of TD (until I can get to BB). Hopefully this issue will get fixed soon, because it is a true PITA!

I can consistenly cause this issue by logging in on several characters switching between them from the character select screen. Every single time it will hang when I log into a character that is in Timerous Deep. After killing the game, I will not be able to log back into that character or any other character in TD until I have rebooted my machine. Once i've done the reboot I can log into a character in TD but if I switch characters I will no longer be able to log into TD.

I tried loading another MMO after killing EQII before starting it up again to see if that would clear things out, but so far the only thing that works for me is a reboot.

It hangs at the environmental map.

I hope you can figure this out, cause it's annoying.

While the game is loading, when you see, adding character all that stuff for zoning into TD...I hold down the W button for moving forward and repeatedly push the up arrow...it seems to "catch" the character rather then it locking up on the enviro part.
Well, the problem isn't thta I can't log back in - Simply ending the EQ2 process and logging back in works fine, it's that it gets hung up constantly when zoning! (As my character's home point is Timorous, it's a bit wearing!)

I will try removing all the files listed there however, just to be sure it doesn't help - As I said, my real concern is that it happens justa bout every time I recall to Timorous, so I'll remove those files and see if it stops happening and post back.

This is still an issue. Only in TD when I log out Mok Rent, but still. It's very very annoying and has been for over a year now. Deleting the UI settings and cache always fix it but come on, it's time to get this bug fixed.

Wow, I just happened across this thread. I've had the exact same problem for a very long time. I've re-intalled the game from scratch repeatedly over the last several months, as I've replaced my HDD a couple times. It still happens to me. The "banaid" fix reminds me of the whole Vanguard debacle.../flush every so often and there won't be a vid problem. I have a much better solution....fix the bug causing this, assuming SoE still does bug fixes.

I've not been able to reproduce the issue so it being a bug is a very loose way to refer to it at this point. I'd like to investigate your specific cause as it doesn't affect many people in any way.

Would you be able to post your DXDIAG and/or PM it to me?

[EQII] Video walkthrough: Generating dxdiag, msinfo32 and netinfo files

I see there hasn't been any more discussion on this topic. However I had this same issue tonight. I was able to fix the problem finally. Here is the events:

BTW i have no UI mods.

- Played on my toon on my main rig which can handle about anything. Hes was logged out in the pool area with the quest givers in Mok Rent. Some reason this area may be a dead zone for logging out. For some comps that is. Prob some graphic issue i assume.

- Tried to play the same toon on my gameing laptop which is good but not as good as my rig.

- Tried to login toon and i get "Updating environment map" and the loading bar freezes. Tried 4 times. (Laptop)

- Went back to main rig logged into toon with it and was able to get in no prob. So i flew my toon to Chikori Station, or whatever its called, and logged out.

- Jumped back on laptop attempted again to log in with toon and....SUCCESS. He logged in whithin 10 seconds after the character select screen.

So not sure where u all are logged out at. Maybe near water? Maybe in Mok Rent?

Hope this helps some.

I'm having this problem right now.

Everything was fine last night but now I can not seem to load the area at all.

Update! Thanks to the very kind GM Buncle I had my toon moved to the Commonlands...now he loads just fine!

Hats off to the swift and courteous SOE support staff! ^_^

I'm getting this error now with being stuck with "Updating Environmental Map" with one of my characters. I was able to play him just fine yesterday too

Funny note, I have another character camped almost the same spot (Mok Rek) that I can log in fine. *EDIT* Or so I thought. That character is stuck now also.

I tried removing the two .ini as suggested but this didn't work. I suppose I'll have to ask a GM to move him

Same thing - I have three chars, two nowhere near Timorous, one based there until I can get him to Freeport. No luck logging him in, always hangs at "updating environment map"

As temporary relief, if your EQII game folder has a PAKS folder in it, you can delete the timorous deep files directly from that PAKS folder. This will force the game to redownload clean copies. It is not impossible for these to become corrupt. But I cannot say for certain that this is your issue.

The TD area is very problematic and I am reporting it as much as possible.

I have done all the various deletions listed here, the problem keeps reoccuring. I have since moved to Freeport. Occasionally, I do get locked at different screens trying to enter housing in Halas, but it is very rare.

It happened no matter where I camped in TD - a screen lock at "Updating Environmental Map." Mok Rent was no better or worse for me. It happened with almost 100% regularity. To get around it, I would log in a different character and /camp CHAR_NAME directly to the affected character. While the screens loaded, I would hit W and Up Arrow at the same time. This worked every time.

Good luck resolving it.

Redmouser
