It's also possible that Lucan is a Firstborn of the Bayle line (they are conidered cursed, never in line for the throne, raised in other cities, and usually turn out EEEeeEEEEEeeevil)

I like that idea, however the qeynos claymore quest insinuates that the curse was placed well after the shattering. Lucan was around to kill in eq1, he was a fun pull

If i remember correctly Lucan was a street urchin before the Crusade of Tears and was a common thief before a paladin took him under his wing. He might have been somewhere else before that though!

If Lucan were somehow a part of the Bayle linneage (which I am not willing to discount out of hand), then he would have been the son of Antonius Bayle II, and sibling to Antonius Bayle III.

As was his way, Vhalen left us some maddening hints that we have yet to answer fully. From an interview at Fan Faire awhile back:

What are his origins like lineage, parents, race, etc.?

Vhalen: There are those in Norrath that have held that secret for ages. These Norrathians have held this secret since before the existence of Lucan D'Lere.

We know Lucan is a widow. Who was his wife? How and when did she die?

Vhalen: Here's a hint at the when. It is rare for the members of the Knights of Truth to get married. They devote their lives to Mithaniel Marr. As for who, you have heard the name before, but more than likely, only a small number of you have met her. As for his longevity, there is one person in Freeport that may hold the answer. But he not what we all believe or know.(my emphasis)

Vhalen repeatedly cast doubts about Lucan actually being a lich as most believe, and hints that his longevity accures from some other source, though he would never be pinned down as to specifics.

I have a feeling that the truth, when it is finally revealed will come out of left field and will be something completely unexpected.

[For some reason Captain Draik Varlos, (aka: Darathar), keeps nagging at me whenever I ponder Lucan D'Lere. Not that Lucan is Darathar, but Lucan as a dragon makes me wonder at times.]

Anyway, just a wild flight of fancy.

I'm fond of speculation, let's try this out for size:

Lucan's longevity, power, claim on Soulfire... perhaps he has a parent among Norrath's pantheon. Really left field speculation, but my money would be on one of the Marrs.
