I had a 200AA, mythed coercer for a long time, I don't have that account anymore, long story for another time. I recently started an Illy and got him to 57 and am starting to get a flavor for Illy's.

I must say I am quite bored, it seems like Illy's have no flavor, I can't quite put my finger on it. The pet is great for soloing, it roots, stifles, dazes and makes my life quite easy, but it's not all about soloing. I miss my blue AOE, oh how I miss that. I miss some of my stuns.

Just curious if any high level Illy has converted to coercer and why. I would like to try to commit to get to 80 with the Illy at the very least, but I'm finding that with each passing level it's more difficult to not switch.

Hi, I started with an illu and betrayed to coercer. This was some time ago, so I have not tried the latest version of illu.

I was very happy with the change in class. I love my coercer.

The reason I did it was for our guilds raiding. We lacked coercer and one was needed for some mobs (splitting).

I think that you will find more people have betrayed to Illy rather than from it.

Given how half our AA's are useless or somehow enhance useless spells, and this trend continues through TSO into SF. We have one of the worst new endlines Ive ever seen.

About two years ago? A year ago? Sorry old age. Anyway Coercer's finally got a huge fix after many in the Coercer comunity either quit or betrayed. Many of the best Coercers that I knew at the time simply quit after complaining about problems with the class since GU13. They never thought Coercers would be fixed and so just moved on to other games and gave up on the only class they wanted to play. Some returned after the fix, but most having moved on just never came back.

Before the fix, no one want to play a Coercer, myself included. I ended up switching my main to my Troubadour for a long time. You couldn't even hardly find a Coercer even if for some really crazy reason you where looking for one.

After the fix? Coercers everywhere. People were rolling up and leveling new Coercers all over the place.

Since the fix Coercers have been fairly ignored by SOE (that's a good thing). But now with the new expansion we will be somewhat left behind some from our Illusionist counterpart, especially as Zarulm stated, our new AA's are a little.. well... unimpressive compared to other mage classes. You will see Coercers dropping down or off the parse list once again. We are being pushed back into the buff bot slot we where in before the big fix.

So the big questions are:

How many fair weather Coercers will betray back to Illusionist?

How many fair weather Coercers will go back to what ever their mains where before?

How many people who rolled and leveled a Coercer will go back to their previous mains now that those mains (depending on class) have been fixed?

Coercers are still the least played class in the game and looks like it will stay that way, which I'm very OK with. I just don't want to become such a small minority like before that to get anything done for our class it requires massive amounts of Coercers betraying or quiting again.

For me it will depend on the next few GU's do before I give up my Coercer. I happen to love the class. But I won't keep playing it if SOE returns it to the status it was at before the fix. I hated begging for people to let me group.

Interesting observations. My illy has been level 80, T3/T4 equipped, mythical equipped, and regularly raiding TSO content for some time now. I feel very comfortable directly comparing both enchanters at end game. If SF never came out it would be a tougher decision, but I think I would still betray to coercer as I like their utility better. They are pretty evenly balanced, I think I just like the "flavor" of the coercer more.

But with the SF release I see the Illy is the one who is being downgraded in some aspects, especially in power management. I'm going to be forced to level to 90 as an Illy (since you cant start the myth buff quest until 90) but that will give me an opportunity to gauge how the xpac has affected us. I'm pretty sure I'll be betraying to coercer at 90, but am leaving that option open as I level and get to know what's changed. I have played a buffed coercer and a buffed illy at group and raid level in the beta program and am still inclined towards the coercer, but we'll see what happens.

My observations from beta are that Illusionists will still be better at buffing their group's dps, Coercers slightly better personal dps. Illusionists buffs being less restrictive on target are still easier to slot into whatever group build, Coercers remain fighter/priest focused. Coercers better mana regen. I will also predict that many of the fairer weather enchanters will cease having the desire to play one, but raids will still want 4 of them. All this will result in is the old crowd of folks playing an enchanter solely for the raid slot will change mains or quit, and a new batch of folks who don't have and won't gain class mastery will be getting raid slots even though they suck at the class.

I have a mythed Illy on AB and a mythed coercer on Nagafen. I mostly chose the coercer on Nagafen because I didn't want to level up another illy. The fact is the classes are very similar but you have a few differences.

A coercer brings a few things to a group: +hate for the tank, +healing for one healer, a deagro buff with a slot cost, and a DPS buff for melee classes. This makes the coercer very desirable in a group since agro management and healing are the two most basic dynamics of most MMORPGs, including EQ2.

An illusionist mainly brings more DPS to a group, with illusionary arm, time compression, and synergism (though TC can be put on a healer for better healing too).

In a raid, illusionists are more in demand because what the coercer brings is most useful in the MT group, whereas the illy can be very useful in the other three groups.

I find I can play either without feeling I'm missing much. You say you miss the blue AE but in a raid situation you'd have to get very close to the mob to be able to use it, thus risking taking dmg and AEs from being up close.

I love being able to give a whole group mana flow with the coercer. With the illy, I love how my buffs are in very high demand. I find the illy produces mana much more effortlessly. This, sadly, is being nerfed to hell in SF.

Having to have a mob available to get a pet annoys me with the coercer. Very often in a raid you die while fighting a strong named and when you revive there are no longer adds available to get another pet. This means your DPS takes a hit and there's nothing you can do about it. The illy has a permanent pet and doesn't have this problem.

The classes both have their strengths and I like them both. It might be that the coercer is stronger in PvP because you can mez a player, debuff him to kingdom come, and thus when you start blasting you already have a big advantage.
