Currently my system is bordering 4 years old, but has been upgraded...

Current specifications:

Power Supply PC Power & Cooling 610

Abit AT8-32 939 motherboard

Video Card Ati 4870 2 Gig

Cpu AMD FX 55 2.6ghz

4 gig Mushkin Redline 3200 ram

80 and 120 gig sata Harddrives

Plenty of cooling provided by Lian li 1200 plus chassis

Win XP Pro 64bit

There is a couple cpu upgrades I could make.. being FX 60 or Opteron 165, I could possibly upgrade ram by raplacing it all with slower ecc server ram for a total of 8 gigs

I currently cannot max out EQ2 at a decent frame rate, would it help with a cpu upgrade, or should I just think about upgrading my whole system?

Im sure the game would run way better on a older single core 3ghz over a newer 2.5ghz Quad Core.

Even my current system.....9550 C2Quad (@3.4ghz), 8GB and ATI 5850 is not really able to run full MAX.

The cache size has increased by a fairly large amount on modern processors and that tends to yield equivelent or better performance with a slightly lower CPU speed. Plus, heat management has advanced significantly since the older days and now you can overclock to much higher levels without melting your chip.

Upgrading your processor will probably increase your performance but everything is is probably fine as is(besides maybe your motherboard if you're choosing a different socket type). Increasing your RAM beyond 4gb isn't going to help EQ2 much if at all and your graphics card is generally fine. Let us know if you have any further questions.
