I was just scrolling around on my TSO AA page to refresh what is going on with my seldom played mystic. I noticed when I scrolled over Ancient Pedigree (shaman line end ability) the tooltip had a funny display for me:

Effects:

Grants the spell Ancient Claws.

Inflicts 0 magic damage on target

Applies Ancient Pedigree to qualifying pets.

Increases Max Health of target by 25%

Ok great, the max health is a nice boost, but why is Ancient Claws reading as zero damage? Anyone else see the same thing?

Thanks for the reply, but I'm going to have to respectfully disagree with you. I'm fairly certain there was a damage component on it when I first selected the ability a couple months ago - I have it on my pure dps spec so I'm about 98% sure this is the case. I remember thinking it will be a help (albeit a small one) when I was running around the Moors doing daily repeatables for AA (before they upgraded quest AA).

I don't know if it's just not reading properly now or if it got broke during an update. If any of you are logged in while reading this, I'd love to hear if it displays the same for you. Otherwise I guess it's off to the training dummy for me tonight to check into it.

Sounds like you just don't have a valid weapon equipped. You need a valid weapon equipped to calculate melee attack damage and if you don't it just defaults to 0 like that. I know it looks a bit confusing but its a complicated fix for something that 99% of the time people don't see.

This seems to imply that the damage dealt by our dog is based upon the weapon we (the Shaman) are currently wielding . . . true?

Holy crap that's it. Now that you mention it, I was tradeskilling and just happened to be reading over some AA's to re-familiarize myself with the class. I kinda feel like a dunce now.

On the other hand, like Bandit stated - it does seem odd if our dog's damage is calculated based on the quality of our weapon. I'm going to go equip my cudgel and recheck the tool-tip, then compare it to a few 2h spears/hammers I keep lying around. Perhaps the AA is a static amount, but just needs a viable weapon - any weapon - to display properly.

EDIT: Ok I checked it out with a few different weapons. First was the Mythical, and yes it restored the description to properly display a damage amount. I then equipped a 2h spear I sometimes use in a pure dps mode. The damage on Ancient Pedigree only went up 1 point despite a large gap in damage ratio between the items. I then noticed there was a difference of 2 points on Strength on the items, so that seems to be playing a role in the AA's damage. I then bought a level 1 MC elm club and equipped it. The club had no strength bonus, and my dog's attack went down by about 20 points.

So if I can trust these numbers are displaying properly - the shaman's strength score affects how hard the dog's Ancient Claws proc will hit for.

It sounds to me like the bug is related to your ability to see the spell information. I imagine that it is similar to what happens when you examine armor while you are mentored. Even if you are not wearing it, it appears nerfed because you are looking at it mentored. The spell is independent of you, but when you are examining it, it was probably easier to program it similar to how you view your own spells (meaning it calculates the information based off your gear, stats, even AA). This effect can also be seen when examining other classes' combat arts and spells. If you look at a defiler group ward scroll (expert, master, etc), you can see Kindred Restoration if you are specced for it in TSO or bane warding if you are wearing that armor (as a mystic). What I'm trying to say is, I highly doubt that anything but the level of the dog and the buffs that are on it affect the damage of that spell. If you really want to know what it is capable of, try running some experiments using ACT.
