I am new to EQ 2 and started a Templar as my first class. So far the class is cool but there a few things I dont understand.

1. What is the most important stat for a Templar? Wisdom or Intelligence?

2. Does my melee weapon affect how much damgage my spells like Divine Smite do? If not then what affects my spells damage?

3. As for as skills I get skill level upgrades as I level but still have to buy higher grades like Adept an Grandmaster? How does this work?

In brief:

Wisdom is the Templar's prime stat, but a lot of the Templar's dps does come from spell damage so Int is important even if not as important as Wis.

No, your melee weapon won't affect spell damage unless, of course, it has stats that give pluses to Int or spell damage.

Now, I haven't played a low level toon since they changed spell names, but I'm "assuming" nothing else has change about automatically getting spells at your lower levels - which are weaker versions of the spell. So, if you want "upgraded" versions of those spells then you will need to buy them (or get them as loot drops). At your lower levels, though, you may do just fine without upgrading many spells. Mostly because you'll level so fast that it might not be worth the cost to you to buy upgraded versions. At a certain point, I forget which level, you won't even get the automatic weak spells, though you can buy them from specific merchants for your class. However, by that point, you might as well just go on the broker and buy the better versions.

IMO, I don't think you need better then Adept I (or whatever it's named now) for anything until maybe you reach level 30. Even then I'd be selective about what I spent my money on. By then, you'll have a good feel for which spells/combat arts are your most important and worth the upgrade cost. At higher levels, you'll find that you'll want to upgrade more and more (and have the money to do it). At level 70+ you'll want adept III or masters for most (or even all) of your spells . (Well, they're not called adept III now. Just do a search for new spell names/progression - there's a thread that explains all that).

You can hover over your stats in your persona window and they will give an explanation of what each does, but here's a summary for priests:

Str: increase your weapon's autoattack damage. I believe it also increases CA damage (we get a couple as AA's).

Agi: increases your chance to avoid a melee attack. This is quite useless for a templar. I would consider it our least important stat.

Sta: increase max health.

Wis: increase max power, add a little in the magical resistances. Also, our mythical epic gives a boost to healing based on our wisdom. At lower levels it's not really too important except for max power.

Int: increases spell damage. increases critical mitigation (which you will not need until you hit level 80 or so)

For soloing I think you'll want to focus on Str and Int to help increase your damage output, while also finding Sta and Wis where you can.

For skills, you'll automatically get the "apprentice" version each time you level. These free spells used to stop at level 50 but it was recently changed so you get the new spells at all levels now. The apprentice spell is a very weak version of the spell. You can upgrade these spells by buying a "Journeyman" version from tradeskillers. These are generally fairly cheap. There are also Adept spell drops in treasure chests you can scribe. They are better than Journeyman. After Adept you also have Expert and Master options for your spells. Expert uses a rare harvest and requires a sage to make your templar spell. Masters are fairly rare drops, usually from boss type mobs. Grandmaster spells are the best, but are only available to a handful of spells. You choose from your grandmaster options about once ever 10 levels.

I really wouldn't worry too much about upgrading your spells until you hit level 60 or higher as you will level too quickly in the earlier levels to really make upgrades worthwhile. If apprentice isn't cutting it for you I would look at upgrading your 2 reactive heals to adept and see if that helps. Otherwise I'd save the coin and wait until higher levels.
