You have to delete them from the registry I had this happen when I tried out Win 7 RC I just had to google awhile to find the fix.

If so, which? The kind of unusual behavior you're reporting is usually caused by an antivirus trying to quarantine a game file.

I'm seeing the same with Home Premium 64 bit and Norton Internet Security 2010 - both before and after I reinstalled Eq2 to fix another issue.

You can remove them with regedit but that doesn't prevent more from being created when you run the game again.

It appears that this is a Windows 7 issue. We are currently doing some compatibility testing so you may want to read the following thread and report the issue through there as well:

http://forums.station.sony.com/eq2/...topic_id=455981

I believe this issue has already been posted there, but further confirmation is always helpful.

Quick question for those having the problem to try and narrow it down a little, how do you start the game ?

I'm not seeing this problem (Win 7 64 , Professional) , but I always start using everquest2.exe and not the patcher.

This is only with EQ2. I run vanguard and this issue doesn't happen. Vanguard uses the same launchpad program. It is a MS Issue on their end.

I reall dont think its an MS issue. It's Somewhere in EQ2 registry.. EQ2 was creaed before Windows Vista, and I think that somehow the programming guys did'nt get access to the new programming styles thats for Windows 7.

My guess is, Its a simple problem that someone need to look into, and probobly can be fixed with a small effort from SoE.

The problem has been posted in the Win7 compatibility thread so hopefully we'll see an update soon.

I'm seeing this problem as well: A new EQ2 icon in the Windows 7 Games Explorer every time I start the launcher. And of course, none of the icons work. I'm not sure why it should say "Desert of Flames" every time, either, since I installed the Shadow Odyssey complete package and patched up from there. I'd be happy if it just said "EverQuest II".

Apart from this somewhat annoying little problem, I've had no problems with EQ2 under Windows 7 (64-bit).

-- Peri

As has been posted here, there is a way to fix this that involves tinkering in the registry. For those that are interested I found this site: http://www.webexpressplus.com/blog/...games-menu.html

This worked for me, I just deleted all the EQ2 entries, until this is fixed I will just run the program from the exe rather than the launcher.

I also have been getting extra Desert of Flames menu items under Windows 7, but I only had 4 until I started testing.

I have two desktop icons:

One starts the game for Test Server, and points to TestEQ2.exe in the TestServer folder. Run as Administrator is checked under the Advanced options. In the compatibility tab, WinXP SP3 Compatibility is checked and I can't change the setting. When I run the game using this setup I do not get extra menu items added. Since I play on Test this is my usual way to run the game.

The other points to EQ2.exe directly in the Everquest 2 folder. Run as Administrator is checked under the Advanced options. In the compatibility tab, WinXP SP3 Compatibility is not checked. I hardly ever run the game this way, but each time I do I get the extra menu item added for EverQuest II: Desert of Flames.

When I run via the live servers (EQ2.exe) the extra game menu item is added immediately upon the patcher starting up (just as the SOE window is displayed).

For the live servers, I changed the shortcut properties so that they matched my setting for Test. There was no difference in the behavior though, double clicking the shortcut to live servers immediately added another game menu entry.

The Test server version appears to be fixed.

Thought you would like to know there is very little SOE can do about this as it is a Microsoft problem. With the Game explorer windows will add Games that are in its database witch is mainly held on a Microsoft server dev's can add this info aswell on there disc's etc but it is ultametly the windows programing that is resopnsable for this so its something that we the comunity and SOE need to bring up with MS to get a update for it

I decided that since all of our Win7 systems have this issue and some people have literally hundreds of icons that I would build a little app to clear it up.

The program is tiny so should be fast and easy to run. It checks for Windows 7 and any other version won't let you delete the icons. It checks for all icons in the registry with the title "EverQuest II: Desert of Flames" and gives you the tally. If you press the Delete Duplicate Icons button, it will remove them all. You may then create as many more as you want!

The source code is available as well under the Microsoft Public License.

Run the EQ2 Supernumerary HyperIcon UltraExterminator (it's an exe file).

or

Download the source code (it's in a zip file).

Of course, there are no guaranties or warranties or any other promises implied or whispered, and we have all of our fingers and toes crossed behind our backs whenever any promises are made. But, it works fine on our systems.

I can guarantee that this is not a MS issue, because only Everquest II has it. No other games that I have heard of have any problem similar to this one. This is obviously a problem with the way Everquest II handles itself. SOE really needs to make the fix for it, which should be a very simple change in the handling of the registry.

Same. I recently did a clean install, found a link to the "old" launcher and it's been creating a new link everytime I start the game. Seems like SOE's "fix" was to just get rid of the old school launcher and go strictly with the streaming client which sucked. I left it running over night and it only downloaded 700Mb out of 4.3Gb. I uninstalled the streaming client then found a link to the old launcher. I was ingame in 2 hours after it completely installed the game.

I would install the station launcher but A) I don't like it and B) I can't find it anyway.

I don't know if this helps at all, but the games link it is putting in says "Everquest II: Desert of Flames". Also, when I remove the icons via registry, the game isn't being put under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentV ersionGameUXGames, instead it is putting entries in: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentV ersionGameUXS-1-5-21-4097194444-3921881077-3894878183-1001

If you prefer to have the game fully installed prior to starting it up, you can leave the streaming client running the background. You can hit play after it has fully installed.

i tried to run stream with a fully installed client and it still did the loading thing, but this was about 6 months ago. i also tried the new all-in-one launcher and it tried to do a full download of all my games everytime. EQ1, EQ2, SWG, PS, ... this i have tried a week ago. i was told not to use the stream client by CS if i was a raiding or serious player. whats the point of using streams if you have to fully load the client? in anycase, a lot of people use the standard launcher, it should be fixed, dont see why it cant, and i think it maybe a move to push people into the new launchers!
