I recently bought a new computer with better gaming capabilities than my older one, and while it should play EQ2 fine, it has a passive (meaning no matter which setting I put it at, from quality to extreme performance, it's always there) annoying choppy laggy stuttering when I'm walking around (never when standing in place) that's annoyed me to the point of not being able to enjoy the game anymore.

I'm using a new Gateway with...

* Windows Vista 64-Bit Home Premium with SP1

* AMD Phenom X4 9750 quad-core processor

* 8 GB DDR2 Ram

* ATI Radeon HD 4650 1024MB Graphics Card

No matter how much I change the settings, quality, performance, etc, in EQ2, no matter how much I fiddle with it, it's always there. It's just annoying enough to give up playing after a short play. I've updated my drivers, changed the ATI graphics settings a lot, ran EQ2 with XP capatibility, ran it as administrator, etc. Nothing alters it.

I can have quality turned up quite a bit, and that's the only type of choppyness / stuttering I get, it's passive as I walk around, and when I turn it down to extreme performance, it's same exact thing. No difference there.

The sound also stutters a bit sometimes when it's does it.

Any ideas? I've been playing EQ2 since 2006 on two different computers, and while I had to turn down the quality on both of my older ones, it was still smooth and playable. I bought this one primarily to be able to play EQ2 with quality turned up, but it has that annoying stuttering choppyness that hinders my gameplay, no matter what setting I'm on.

Try disabling your virtual memory (Less hard drive accesses). With 8GB of ram don't think you will have any issues disabling the VM.. Just set to to no paging file..

If it doesn't help you can always set it back..

I and a lot of other players I know have been experiencing the stutter/choppyness you refer to since GU53 went live.

Kinda sucks that we have to run EQ2 on medium/low settings when we have rigs with 8gigs of memory dual core processors and all the bells and whistles.I can sit in South/North Qeynos without moving and watch my framerates go from 40 down to between 1-5 without even touching my mouse/keyboard.

Hopefully todays hotfix will include something to alleviate the problem

we live in hope

I got it fixed!

What I did, was I disabled Vertical Sync in my ATI Settings, and I set the EverQuest2 game (and patcher just to be sure) to Windows 2003 (Service Pack 1) Compatibility (instead of Windows XP Compatibility) and now there's no choppyness / lag out of the ordinary, the game is running smooth again.
