View Full Version : Newest nVidia drivers linked to EQ2 crashing (191.07)

System stats:

WinXP Pro SP3, Core2Duo E6600 @3.44ghz, 4 gigs g.skill, EVGA 8800 Ultra 786mb

So I installed the latest nVidia drivers when they were released (version 191.07). Ever since I installed the drivers, I noticed EQ2 had been crashing on me very often. For example, if I were in the game and I were to go to the start menu and click on "My Computer" and the "My Computer" window would pop up over the EQ2 game window, about 2 seconds later, my gamma correction would get dark and an error box would pop up over the EQ2 window. It said something to the effect of EQ2 has encountered a client error (I didn't write down the actual error). I could still play the game until I clicked the OK button, and then the game client would close. I repeated this process 5 times in a row. Whether I was at the EQ2 login screen or in the game didn't make a difference, but when I clicked on "My Computer" and the window popped up over the EQ2 window, EQ2 would crash a second or two later. Like clockwork.

At first I thought it might be my video card overheating. I started checking my GPU temperatures, but I wasn't getting over 90C while in EQ2. So next thing I tried was re-installing the latest video card drivers. No luck, still crashed when I opened "My Computer." Next thing I tried was reverting back to the previous nVidia drivers (190.62). Lo and behold, reverting to the earlier drivers worked! I can click on "My Computer" and the game does not crash now.

To cement my theory that it's the new nVidia drivers causing the issue, I re-installed the newest drivers (191.07) and tried opening "My Computer" while in game. The game crashed, just like before. Reverting back to the previous drivers (190.62) again completely solved the problem. Using default driver settings in both drivers. Clearly there is something in the newest nVidia drivers that is causing EQ2 crashes. Can someone please look into this and see what could possibly be happening? I would like to use the newest drivers because it provides performance increases in many games. I will also attempt to contact nVidia about this issue so they can investigate their latest drivers to see what could be causing these errors.

As a side note, I also noticed that I would crash with the newest drivers not only when I opened "My Computer" but when I tried maximizing my screen from windowed mode to full screen mode (alt-enter). Please investigate. Thank you!

This has been happening to me as well, it appears to be an issue with 8000 series nvidia cards with the latest drivers, this bug opens up when opening any other media related problem while everquest is minimized, so far this includes windows media files, pictures and even ventrilo.

As kruhl mentioned, this bug doesnt appear to effect your gameplay at all, but it does force you to hide the windows crash notification, ive found the best way to do this is to open up the windows crash information website, this seems to put the crash notification in a secondard state and allows you to drag it below any other problems you have open.

people report this issue to nvidia and if this annoys you enough you can uninstall your current drivers and install the 190.00 series ones instead.

Absolutely correct. Reverting to the previous drivers solves the issue, so it's clearly linked to the new drivers. I have no idea what's causing the issue, but it sounds like an nVidia screw up.

I have posted about being affected by this as well. Got around to installing previous driveres--190.62--and that seems to have fixed it.

I'm working to get this mentioned in the KB as a top issue. Thanks to everyone for reporting the situation.

If it's nVidia's issue, I'll make it a point to get them to fix it ASAP, as I want to be using the latest drivers.

Ever since they updated to the 190.xx series we have been seeing a massive increase in driver issues. On my machine at home the screen would actually flash when running Java applications. I also experienced weird stuttering in a few other games. Hopefully we'll see a new version soon that resolves some of these issues.

I've submitted a bug report to nVidia, so hopefully they read it and act accordingly.

One other thing I would like to ask the people having this issue, is what operating system are you running? The reason I ask, is if you now try to download drivers from nVidia, and you specify you have an 8 series card under WinXP, it points you to drivers 175.19. I know when I downloaded the latest drivers, it didn't point me to the older 175.19 series drivers, so it's possible nVidia has realized there's a big issue with these latest drivers, but only seems to think it's a problem in Windows XP.

If you're having crashing issues with the latest drivers, please let us know what operating system you're using. If everybody that is having issues is using WinXP, that could provide some insight.

Does anyone have a link to the 190.62 driver? I can't get a retrograded driver from nvidia anywhere on their site and I had to reinstall my computer fresh =(, so no previous driver to retrograde to =/.

Search for "nvidia 190.62". It's the first link...

I've gone back to using 178.13 with my 6800GT. These 19X drivers just seem real problematic with more than just EQ2.

Yes I upgraded my windows xp nvidia drivers to the ones dated october 5, for no good reason other than that windows update said they were available. Big mistake!

Getting random massive video corruption and interferance with my sound card. (Keeps popping up the window saying i just plugged in a new jack) Crashes my whole system so hard i have to hard reboot.

I went back to 186 drivers, and still having the same issue. I see someone here had success with the 175 drivers, I'll try those I guess.

Are you SURE this is a driver problem? or is there something wrong with the newest patch file?

No. The issue being discussed in this thread is a driver issue, though. Did the problem you're describing start when you updated the drivers? If so then it is almost surely a driver issue in your case as well.

Currently I'm recommending 186 for most systems, and it looks like 195 is going to be the best choice for Win7 once it is officially released.
