I recently installed on this OS and find that in EQ II I am unable to run in windowed mode or alt tab to view other things.

If I try my mouse is held hostage in the upper left area of the screen. I can't even alt tab to other programs in the background as the EQ II window is forced to be the top window. I have a similar problem with Eve Online but with Eve I can at least alt tab and view other things/second program instance and my mouse is free to interact with other programs.

I have tried "Run as Administrator" right click shortcut launch button which doesn't work for either game.

Since similar problems happen in two different games, I assume this is a Vista problem that everyone has? I have tried using other programs such as WinEQ2's windowed mode with no help.

Greetings,

As a first step please make sure your version of Windows is completely up to date using Windows update. Then install the most up to date drivers for the mouse, assuming there is a new version available. If that doesn't work then I would advise a reinstall of DirectX 9.0c. You can download that through the following link:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...;displaylang=en

There are no updates to the OS, no mouse updates, and I think I already did Dx9 as it tells me

DirectX setup has determined that a newer or equivalent version of DirectX has been installed already. No installation is required. (Finish button only available)

BTW I tried running in XP compat mode and it didn't work.

Greetings,

Do you use some sort of Infrared device such as a remote control? There is an issue with Vista that will sometimes cause a similar issue if you are using an IR device. I thought it was fixed with last service pack but that's what it sounds like in this case. Let me know if you're using any such device.

no.

My mouse is a Logitech optical mouse. I don't see how an IR device can cause windowed mode problems.

Sorry for the lack of response. I was only in the office on Wednesday last week because of some medical issues.

Let's try some different driver configurations for the mouse. First let's try with the latest version available through Logitech. You should be able to find and download those drivers through the following website:

http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/s...e/&cl=us,en

If that doesn't work then I'd like to uninstall all drivers and use the default Windows drivers to see if that corrects the issue. Let us know if that corrects the problem.

As stated before, Logitech drivers are already on the system.

Download InstructionThis device uses the native drivers when used with Microsoft Vista™. If you do not have Vista, please select another operating system from the dropdown list above. This product originally shipped with either iTouch or MouseWare, which are not compatible with Vista. We strongly recommend to uninstall iTouch and/or MouseWare prior to migrating to Windows Vista. After iTouch and MouseWare are uninstalled, the basic functionality of your devices will be provided by the Windows native driver.

I actually have two Program Files directories. One on my C drive and one on my D drive. My D/Program Files is where I can still use some of my old programs from Windows XP. Like you've done with EQ2, one can install programs wherever they want. Even if a program is installed into C/Program Files, it will run in 64-bit only if it is coded for 64-bit. C/Program Files is just a directory label; 32-bit programs can be installed into there and run, but it is not recommended.

That is really weird with the mouse disappearing

I found this in an unrelated game about a mouse disappearing in a Civilization (might help):

1) Open: CONTROL PANEL 2) Select: Mouse Pointers 3) Disable ALL ancillary pointer behavior (e.g. shadows, trails, non-default pointer shapes, precision enhancement, Snap-To, Hide-pointer-while-typing... You dont have to keep the changes, just see if they allow you to operate seamlessly in windowed mode. You drag it any which way and it just wants to stay in that corner like a rubber band is on it. While I was starting it up again to see how it behaved, I accidently dragged the window, pulling it down towards the right. For some reason it is now opening in a window that is smaller than the desktop size. I am unable to move it now since the pointer is trapped on what ever program window I alt tab to. It makes no difference: Browser, WMP, etc. All have no control over the mouse.

- Has the pointer changed to the normal (white) windows pointer, or is it still the EQ2 pointer (brown)? It stays the game pointer until it snaps out of the window.

- Can you operate the game using keyboard macros and arrow keys, while in windowed mode?

Also, previously you told the tech that you were using a Logitech mouse.
your resolution is too high and I'm sure causing issues going into windowed mode, please try 1280x1024 just for a test. Leave your desktop res where it is, Go into full screen mode in the game and change your res to 1280x1024 and apply. I would then try exiting the game and re-entering it and then test windowed mode.

Whenever I run a windowed mode I always make sure my game resolution would be same or smaller as the window I am trying to view the game from.

Let me know if this helps.

Any lowering of the resolution is performed digitally and degrades the image, as opposed to using a CRT which does not. I have used 1680x1050 for years with no problem.
then you simply drag the window to expand it, the issue is somewhere on your rig and not vista. My house ran 3 vista desktops in window mode without issue, and a xp one as well (family that plays together) and I am well aware that with a LCD you set your desktop size for a 1:1 ratio to get pixel perfect images. However I never told you to do anything with your desktop resolution if you read the post. When running in a windowed mode at a lower resolution you still achieve 1:1 ratio keeping the crisp picture.

Excuse the hell out of me for trying to actually help, I have only been in IT for 13 years and don't know anything that I'm talking about.
