I have a relatively new computer and haven't played EQ2 much on it yet, although I have no problems running it other than for the fact that I am not getting any NPC voiceovers. I don't use voicechat, and the music and all sound effects are playing normally through my Audigy soundcard. Everything works fine including the NPC voiceovers on my other computer which has an X-Fi card.

Any ideas whether there are any options within the game settings that might be causing me to lose the voiceovers? They work fine in other games on this machine, it seems to be a problem peculiar to EQ2 but since I haven't played it enough since getting this machine to be sure that voiceovers worked before the new update I can't speculate on whether the issue came in with that update, or whether it's a problem specific to the new machine.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Thanks Wingrider, great minds think alike. I realised just a short while ago that when I installed the game on my new machine I was stuck with that #'@.^&* new launcher which is utterly useless and has precisely zilch going for it, and hadn't spotted the well-concealed menu option for optional downloads. To make matters worse, once I did download the city voiceovers I tested it in the bank in South Qeynos and of course that wasn't an original bank location and therefore doesn't have voiceovers anyway! Once I tried an original bank plus the statues of the city leaders I got full speech.

Thanks again anyway, but hopefully it's now fixed! Wish I could say the same for the launcher which is the flakiest bit of software I've ever seen, no wonder it's still in beta after how ever many years it's been! Why SOE can't at least make it fully optional I don't know, I suppose they're planning on linking it to the Marketplace more directly than they can do with the old launchpad. That seems to be the reasoning behind most changes these days, sad to say.
