View Full Version : Quest feather/completion book not showing above NPCs.

Since the update, I no longer see the Quest Feathers or Books above NPCs. This is in all zones I've been in, on multiple characters, and with the default UI. I have tried all the combinations in the User Interface Options to show quest icons above NPCs. Before the update I had it set to show outleved quests in addition to current level ones.

Tried a Full File Scan. I do use the EQ2MAP skin and the feathers/books do show and blink on the MAP. So, my system is aware that they should be there but just will not display them.

Any ideas?

Weird...

I was in Nektulos Forest, and clicked on the option to show outleved Quests above NPCs and they appeared as grey feathers like normal. However, the quest feathers for my level still will not show above NPCs (Rush Order NPCs, the new Spire Repair quest guys, etc..) A few others are saying they have the same problem. I even created a new character using the default UI and no Quest Feather Icons appeared over the NPCs. Any ideas?

I've also had this happen post-GU. Three Station accounts all logged in at the same time and place. Two accounts could see the feathers and books. The third couldn't. All three accounts had a level 80 toon logged in, standing next to each other. I still haven't figured out what was different about the third account.

So, does your problem only exist on that third account even if played on the same computer that has no problem with the other accounts? Just trying to narrow it down to a problem with the account or a problem with the computer it's played on. Thanks.

I know for a fact that it is cumputer related, not account.

I two box on my desktop and laptop. Since GU 53 my laptop can't see quest feathers above NPC heads but my desktop can. I logged on my account that normally goes on the laptop, to the desktop, and I could see all the feathers again.

Also I'm not sure if you guys are affected but on my laptop, the computer with the missing quest feathers, I also can't see pages for quests. You know, pages you pick up from the ground. But I can see shinies on the laptop. I don't get it.

And no, it's not because I don't have the quest. Both my accounts have the page quests and the desktop can see it on his screen while the laptop can't.

I had two accounts logged onto the same computer. One could see the feathers and one couldn't. The third account on a separate computer could see the feathers.

I suspect the problem is related to "improvements" in the shading.

I set my Performance settings to Extreme just to see what that would do and no difference. If I remember correctly, I have shading turned off. I also deleted my C:GamesEverQuest IIcache directory to see what that would do. No difference. Bridgeplay: the two accounts you played on the same computer where one had the problem and one did not, are they both being played using the same installation of EQ2?

its pretty lame imo...especially for someone like me that really doesn't know much more about computers than plug and play...if i tried to do what is in those instructions, I'm sure I'd mess up and really screw something up...I asked what the alternative is and well, there isn't one according to them...guess i'll just have to get someone who knows how to follow those instructions over to help me...

I made back-ups and deleted the files as mentioned above with no change in behavior. Still no quest feathers. Hmm.. I'm almost to the point of backing-up what I need and uninstalling the game and deleting my entire EverQuest II directory and re-install using my TSO CD. Ugh..

Well.. just an FYI, I decided to rename the UIDefault directory to force the patcher to re-download the default skin. Same thing. Have not uninstalled the game itself yet. Guess I'll wait and see what the devs would have us try. I restored my files so I could recover my UI layout. Hehhh.. at least I'm glad it's more than just me.

With only one system, it's hard for me to verify if I should be seeing a page on the ground or not. Suppose I could run around some zones where there are typically many around. Been crashing a lot more with this update as well, DirectX Out of Memory and loosing the Rendering Device errors.

This is happening to me as well-the quest books and feathers show on the map, but not over the npc's heads.

Also, i have had to turn everything way down to be able to zone into the gh, or i get the "application has ran out of memory while requesting blah blah "issue and crash to desktop-that started with the launch of tso. Another problem since patch is when i do the quests at the spires in antonica-theres one quest where you have to go into an instance and kill 3 groups of mobs-every time i go to zone back out to ant, i lock up at "creating zone"-i can zone into antonica just fine from anywhere else, but when i try to zone from that instance, i have to hit exit, or it stays at 99% of creating zone. It seems like with every update, i have to keep turning the settings down, and now after this update, ive had to turn literally everything down to where the quality of playing the game is poor, all the characters have no detail in their faces, and everything is blurry. I really like the additions/changes you folks made with these last couple of updates, but the quality of gameplay lately(ie graphics, crashing issues) is making me not want to play, as i spend more time zoning, crashing, relogging, etc.

'

I to am haveing the same problem. I do not believe it is on my end. I have 2 computers one running win2000 and one running winxp. I can see overhead quest icons for outleveled but not ones for my level. After I first noticed the problem I switced computers and it was duplicated on second one. I turn off show overhead quest icons and they all disappeared and if I turn off show outleveled quest the outlevel icons dissapear. I have not noticed the pages not being there but will take a look after I log on tonight.

Same problem as mentioned by other posters. SoE first told me to do the delete UI stuff. Didn't work. Then they told me to turn off all non MS services which I wouldn't do. Final response was I must have a non SoE UI which I don't. Only EQ2 map. So just using the minimap to look for feathers and books til they fix this bug. (I hope)

So wasted my day off trying to fix it and downloading that 8 hour patch was not fun. Hope they figure what the did.

This is a weird one. One of my guild mates has 1 computer that works fine and then another older computer with just 1 Gig of RAM (mine also only has 1 Gig of RAM) that does not show the Quest feathers. She's logging on as the same character on both. Seems to be something they did on their end that only manifests itself on our end under certain situations but there appears nothing we can do on our end to fix it, except perhaps a new system and then there's no guarantee. Let's hope the upcoming Hotfix solves it BTW, ran around the Feerrott where I usually see lots of pages on the ground and saw none.

To help clarify, from my experiences anyway, it's the animated pages that do not show.

I had a quest to pick up a map from the floor and I saw it.
I'm having issues with feathers, books, pages as well. However, I want to add something else to the list as well. In Kylong Plains there is a quest "Another Creature" and I can't see that creature even though I know the location and tried scanning my mouse pointer over the area but no success. Is it possible that this quest bug is also related to the same issue causing problems with feathers etc?

If I was able to narrow down the list of files then I certainly would, but I really don't know which one it would be in this case.
Hmmm.. I have an EVGA NVidia 6800GT on my system. During all this I initially had version 178.13 drivers and now have 190.62. Both driver versions had no quest feathers. I'll ask my guildmate with the two systems what graphic cards are in each. This Hotfix did not fix any of my bugs. One of them also being that the by-products of making items still have my Name on them but the actual item does not.
I use ATI as well, and I am having this problem still. I tried deleting my ui files, eq2exe, all the .ini's that were mentioned, and still cant see the feathers/books. I can however, zone into the gh without crashing now, though it takes 3-5 minutes to finish zoning into the gh. I've decided to not play for a bit anyway. With the lag, constant crashing, and just general "buggy-ness" of late, the game just isn't fun for me. Take care all, and hopefully they'll have everything fixed soon.

Well I have an ATI card and am also bugged. One new bug found since I posted earlier--An mob in Miragual--Anthema has gone invis on me also. The Red skulls needed to pop Named.
Well found another thing for me that is missing besides the feathers and colletion pages today. Was doing my 3rd diety quest for the Tribunal where you go to feerrott and after talking ot npc you need to find 2 runes. Went to both spots the runes are at and cant see them and no way to target them so i cannot finish the quest.

That is not the only quest i have not been able to find the clicky item i need since the update, have a few that cannot complet now. Hopefully they will get this fixed soon. Could deal with the no at level quest giver feathers, completion books and no page colletion pick ups but when will not let me finish quests that is a big problem.

I still have the problem. If it was simply a graphic setting, the problem should be there as soon as you start playing the game, correct? It should be drawing and using the same graphic images/textures, correct? The problem does not occur (for me), until I zone the first time. Sometime it will take 2 zonings to cause it. My graphic settings don't mysteriously change during zoning do they? When the Quest feathers go away, the reward books still seem to appear. My guess is that it's something related to the "garbage cleanup", "memory allocation/deallocation", "NPC quest icon status" or something that happens during zoning. When the problem starts, I can turn in a quest (I see the book), and do not see the feather when the NPC is offering the next quest (I can see it on the map). So, even the real-time status change of the NPC is not triggering it to show. It's almost like it's checking to see if the feather image is in memory or loaded and a false positive comes back. The problem happens with whatever graphic settings though.. my normal settings or "extreme performance". I do run 1280x1024 Full Screen, XP Home SP3, 1Gig RDRAM, Intel D850EMV2 MB, NVidia 6800GT with driver versions 178.13 to 196.21 that I'm currently running. The driver version has made no impact that I can tell. Until you can reproduce this on your end, guess we're all kinda SOL.

Also wondering if certain cards are more prone to that problem. Or if it's a memory issue. Also: I'm running SP3 of XP Pro/32 still. No idea if Vista or Win7 users have that problem...

My cards/mem:

NVIDEA GeForce 9800 GT / 4 G had that problem once last year

NVIDEA GeForce 8500 GT / 4 G had that problem 3 or 4 times over the last year, usually cleared with a new patch]

NVIDEA GeDorce 6600 / 1 G is the one that has that problem frequently, reseting graphic resolution fixed it yesterday, but like the others it seems to lose it out of the blue, just far more often than the second system.

All 3 run the same driver, chips: Intel i7 Quad / Intel Duo / Pentium 4. I trashed an older AMD last year which never go the feathers/books back after the problem was first reported.

I have done the copying yesterday and will post when it happens again.

Purr~*loves to catch bugs*

Oooohh, I fixed it on my two machines.

Here is what I did:http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...;displaylang=enNot sure if that link is good or a PURL, but its the web MS Direct X updater. I ran that, updated my direct x, logged back on, and whahla. Quest icons all around!Must have had something out of date with DX is my guess.

Okay: lost feathers again. Worked fine for one character, switched to another account, feathers are gone. That's for the above mentioned 3rd (oldest) system. OOI - sorry

Purr~

Yeah, I installed that DirectX update as well and no change. I used my druid port spell to port within the same zone and afterwards lost feathers/books. Gets tough in some places with many NPCs close together.

I deleted my eq2 directory from the non-working computer, then copied the working version to the machine that did not work: no dice. The only effect it had was that I had to redo my UI

I do alot of software testing for work, so I'm no stranger to the precedures and methodoliges of software testing. Its probably safe to assume the code is written per the MS DX API, so the bug must be something related to the hardware and the way direct x renders the instructions. Or lack of rendering for that matter! heh I didn't do any extensive testing to reproduce it. The feeling I get is that if I come in clean and fresh, I get them, then by actively gaming for a few, zoning and whatnot they dissapear. Because at first I DID see them on all machines and thought I licked the problem. But of course that wasn't the case, as all the machines with the bug seem to be back to square one.Let me know if anyone has any other ideas short of using different hardware.

Ok. I followed the directions for playing on the Test Server (Copying everything into the TestServer directory except for the folders and files mentioned) and made a couple characters in Gfay standing next to the Matron of The Nursery. I also have two characters on the live server in Gfay next to the Matron of the Nursery. On the live server, if I swapped characters once, I would lose the quest feather over her head. On the Test Server I was able to swap characters multiple times without losing the feather over her head. On the Test Server it's kind of tough to really test it out by going to Moors and other zones with a 1st level toon but it does appear to better than what's happening on live with a similar comparison test. Looks promising.
