View Full Version : Motherboard and CPU FSB question

The motherboard I am looking at buying has a FSB of 2600MHz Hyper Transport (5200 MT/s).

The Processor I am looking at has a BUS speed of 667 MHz.

I have seen other processors that have bus speeds of 1000+ so my questions are:

1. is the CPU "BUS" speed the same thing as the MB FSB speed? and

2. if this is the case then is that difference (Performance wise) a huge hit or should I not be concerned with it?

I dont want to buy a CPU that has a slower bus speed that the MB causing a bottle neck.

Any info would be greatly appreciated..

Thanks

Bus speed reflects how much data can be transferred through the computer's hardware over a certain period of time, usually measured in seconds. So it's pretty much narrowed down to bigger = better. 2600Mhz/5200 MT/s is fine for a motherboard. 667 Mhz on a processor is quite slow these days. I strongly reccomend 1066 Mhz or higher bus speed.

Will do and thanks for the fast reply..

Please keep in mind that the straight mhz rating on a CPU stopped being the primary factor for performance a few years ago. These days the potential performance levels for a CPU rely heavily on cache size, the manufacturing process, energy usage, and number of cores. Unless you're fairly proficient then I would advise using review/benchmarking websites to compare performance within your designated price range.

Appreciate the tip.. two more questions.. these are about CAS latency rating with memory and over clocking..

I haven't messed with over clocking in like 5 years or so but back then the lower the CAS latency rating the better so a CAS rating of 3 was considered to be a good over clocking rating and a rating of lets say 6 would be a bad rating for memory.

When I search for CAS-3, I get like 256MB or 512 MB or 1GB when I am looking for 4GB (2x2GB Dual channel);

Now I am seeing CAS ratings of 8 and 9 on what seems to me good quality RAM. So my questions are:

1. If I am looking to over clock now, what CAS rating ram should I get? Most I see is all CAS 7, 8 or 9 typically in the 4GB size options.

-and-

2. If my MB has a FSB speed of 1333 and the RAM I want is listed as "SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800)", will it work with hat MB? or does the RAM have to match exactly the MB FSB Speed? I haven't found any info indicating whether the RAM would be backwards compatible to 1333 if it has a rating of 1600.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Guess I will make separate post for the Memory stuff
