First: I've been playing EQ2 for over 4 years, but mostly just solo or duo, my main is a Templar and I've never focused on fighters until recently. We recently got an influx of guild members and I've just now started playing a fighter in full groups doing heroic instances and stuff.

Okay, with all that said, I've noticed a weird problem playing my Guardian and I'd like to ask here since I'm kinda newbie when it comes to being the main tank of a group.

I recently did Condemned Catacombs and the Commonlands equivelant (Gobblerock's Hideout or something like that) on my 27 (now 33 after those two runs) guardian. My group makeup was something like this:

27 Guardian (Me)24 Dirge (Also me, heh)25 Warden46 Mystic mentored to 2525 Bruiser (Boxed by the mystic)

I was playing primarily on my guardian, my dirge was mostly there for group buffs, although he did manage a few Combat Arts and auto-attack. Same deal with the bruiser, she wasn't really playing much at all except with auto-attack. My guardian was using his defensive stance and that self buff that increases threat every time he gets hit. I had Moderate on the Mystic (reduces her threat), and I was using both my encounter and single target taunts as much as possible.

Here's where I'm confused and the point of this post: I'd pull an encoutner of maybe 3 or 4 mobs, they would all be on me the entire fight, I'd use encounter taunts, I'd use my AOE, and they would be on me the entire fight until I killed the first mob. As soon as I kill the first mob, they seem to go after random group members and when I target them I only have like maybe 30~50% threat or whatever with them and have to taunt them another 3 or 4 times to get them off. It seems kinda random, sometimes they would attack my Dirge or the Bruiser who would definitely not have worked up enough hate, other times they even attacked the Mystic's pet.

I double checked and confirmed that all the group members were assisting me and stuck to my target. I even tried a different strategy while I cycled through the targets and hit each one a few tiems to make sure that the yellow number on that threat window was really low (like under 10, while I had a big red 100). But still, as soon as I killed the first mob in the encounter, the rest of them dispersed and started fighting random group members.

I can assure you that it's not my Guardian just not getting enough aggro, he's got expert or better taunts, full mastercrafted gear, and has really high threat with the monsters until the first one dies, then it just kinda vanishes.

Does anyone know what I'm talking about here, or am I just going crazy? Any tips on how to avoid this besides switching targets right before one dies (and thus prolonging the fight and increasing the damage I take? Can anyone explain what exactly may be causing it?

I'd say you need to do some more experimentation because as far as I know, there is no script for trash mobs that'll make them aggro swap upon a death of someone in their encounter.

If I had to make a guess:

1) The mob got rooted (by that temp stance that increases your mit and can proc a root or something) and if you're not standing next to them, they will aggro whatever is standing near them. You could've rooted them via that proc, and if you step away from them even if you had 100 aggro, they will target whatever is within their melee range and has the next highest hate.

I have never found anything to prevent it and I have no idea why it happens. Condemned Catacombs is definitely one of them. The other big one I recall it happening in was Runnyeye. Thankfully I think it's only lowbie zones, once you get above 50 I can't recall any others like that.

So naw, you're not doing anything wrong, there's just either some sheisty coding or some bizarre mechanics in some of the zones that you just have to deal with. They're not that threatening though so personally I'd say just burn em down.
