Hello, I just started playing Everquest 2 again and I am having an issue with frame rates. The last time I played I had a different computer which got frame rates around 45fps. However on my new system I only get 45 + fps on extreme performance setting.

My previous computer had the specs of: AMD Athlon 64 3700+ 2.2Ghz, 2GB Ocz Platinum ram at DDR400 2-3-2-5 latency, an ATI radeon x1900gt 256mb video card, and windows XP media center 2005 OS.

My new computer has the specs of: AMD Phenom 9600 Black edition x4 overclocked to 2.5ghz, Kingston hyperX Ram at DDR2 1066 5-5-5-18 latency, it has an ATI radeon HD4850 1GB video card, and Gigabyte GA-MA790GP-UD4H motherboard, and Windows Vista Home Premium 64 bit.

I have done the required tweaks to the .exe files to make them run (run as administrator, compatability mode of windows xp SP2), I have disabled UAC, and set my desktop graphics to performance. I have updated my video driver, and I have Vista service Pack 2 installed. Even on the lowest settings I can tell something is not right. This computer should not struggle to get 40 fps on Extreme Performance setting.

Any help would be appreciated, thank you.

Greetings,

A lot of the performance differences can be attributed to the area in which you are testing your framerate. If you were testing in one of the original zones previously and now you're testing in Timorous or Moors then you are going to see a decrease in performance. Also, it's worth noting that recent cards don't scale backwards in the way you might imagine. Try setting your video from extreme performance to high quality. You will probably lose a few frames but it should remain fairly steady.

I would also advise checking out the sticky post at the top of this forum that is for comparing performance.

I have a friend with a very similar system and his frame rates are much higher than mine, my computer has more performance than his. The only large difference in our systems is that he runs windows XP 32, and I run Vista 64.

I know this is not a hardware issue, and I am lost on what the problem could be. The game doesnt feel right, the frame rate is really choppy above balanced setting. This is the only game that I play that runs like this so it is an isolated issue. Is there any files/folders I could delete that would contain settings that would make it run slower? I didn't mention but this copy of everquest was installed on my old computer and I had the data backed up on an external hard drive which I copied over to my new computer. Everquest is on a new 320GB hard drive I just purchased, and it is the only thing I have put on it.

Reinstallation would be painful at this point seeing as I only have the Original EQ2 DVD's, and it took over a day to download the patches with my painfully slow 1.5mbs ADSL even with rise of kunark data already in.

Select the START button.2. Select RUN, then type in "msconfig" (for Vista, type msconfig in the search bar at the bottom of the Start Menu)3. Press OK4. Select the STARTUP tab.5. In the list, uncheck all boxes EXCEPT for SCANREGISTRY and SYSTEM TRAY. If you use Windows XP, please note that SCANREGISTRY and SYSTEM TRAY will not be listed - just uncheck the entire list.6. Hit apply and then OK. Restart the computer and try the game again.

Beyond that, a Windows XP computer wont be using as much memory for the operating system. Keep in mind that even though your Vista PC is 64 bit, the game itself is designed with the x86 architecture and wont address memory beyond the 32 bit limitations.

Thank you, it seems to be running much better now. I will tweak with some more stuff to see if I can get better performance, but I think I can live with it now.

Thank you for your time.

Let us know if you need any further assistance.
